2/14/2019 11:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – It is officially crunch time for the St. Cloud State University men's basketball team. After earning another split in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play, the Huskies hit the road for their final games away from Halenbeck Hall in the regular season. Like the rest of the season, the wins won't come easy for St. Cloud State, as the team takes on MSU-Moorhead and Northern State in a battle for supremacy in the NSIC North Division.
This will be the second meeting between the Huskies and these two teams, as they already met earlier this season in St. Cloud, Minnesota. St. Cloud State walked away with a key split that weekend, falling 77-73 to Northern State before rebounding with a 99-84 win over MSU-Moorhead.
The Huskies will open the weekend at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, when they travel to Moorhead, Minnesota to take on the Dragons before challenging the Wolves Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Fans can follow live stats, video and WJON's live broadcast of the game, and score updates can also be found on the team's official Twitter page (@SCSUmensbball).
Here are the five things to know before this weekend's road action:
3685 – St. Cloud State will certainly be playing in hostile territory this weekend, especially when the team takes on Northern State Saturday. Both MSU-Moorhead and the Wolves rank in the top-5 in the NSIC in attendance this season, though Northern State leads by a landslide. On average, 988 fans fill the stands to watch the Dragons take on their opponents, a paltry number compared to the 1342 Husky fans that fill Halenbeck Hall on average. According to the numbers, though, the Wolves have the largest fan base in the conference, as an average of 3685 people tune in to watch Northern State men's basketball games.
No. 1 – It's been no secret that St. Cloud State's Gage Davis (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook) has been offensively on fire this 2018-19 season. In the past five games alone, the senior has averaged 32.4 points per game and scored 30+ points in all but one of those games. More impressively, those five performances allowed Davis to become the state of Minnesota's all-time leading scorer in men's basketball across Divisions I, II and III. Davis, who has scored 2391 points in his career, broke the 40-year old record on Friday with his 46 point performance against Wayne State, surpassing Saint John's University's Frank Wachlarowicz.
178 – Davis wasn't the only senior to make history this past weekend. Thanks to his three-block performance against the Wildcats on Friday, Sean Smith (Seville, Spain / Canarias Basketball Academy) became the programs all-time leading blocker, as he surpassed Andrew Bernstetter with 175 blocks in his Husky career. Additionally, Smith broke his own school record for single-season blocks against Augustana on Saturday, as he's already tallied an impressive 90 blocks in 2018-19.
91 – St. Cloud State is coming off its most explosive offensive weekend of the season, as the team averaged 91 points per game against the Wildcats and Vikings. Despite the juggernaut of scoring, the Huskies split their road series, as their defense gave up an average of 85 points per game over the weekend, including 92 to Augustana on Saturday.
3.89 – Adam Heede-Andersen (Copenhagen, Denmark / Stenhus Gymnasium) has quietly been one of the top ball handlers in the NSIC all season long. In 24 games, the senior has racked up 70 assists while committing just 18 turnovers as the Huskies starting point guard for an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.89, a number that ranks second in the NSIC.
