ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team will play one final game in the comforts of Halenbeck Hall in the 2018-19 season. After finishing second in both the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) overall and North Division standings, the Huskies earned the No. 2 seed in the playoffs and will host Upper Iowa University in the opening round of the NSIC/Stanford Health Tournament at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 27.
This will be the last time fans can catch St. Cloud State men's basketball in Halenbeck Hall for the remainder of the 2018-19 season. If the Huskies win, they advance to the quarterfinal round of the NSIC/Standford Health Classic and will face the winner of Wayne State/Mary. That game would take place at 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 3 at the Stanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Tickets for Wednesday night's game are $12 for adults, $2 for children ages 5-college and children under the age of five get in free. Additionally, the first 200 St. Cloud State students will get in free with a ticket from the North Balcony ticket booths.
Fans who cannot attend the festivities in person can follow along via live stats, video and WJON's live radio broadcast. Score updates can also be found on St. Cloud State men's basketball official Twitter page (@SCSUmensbball).
Here are the five things to know before Wednesday evening's playoff game:
18 – When the Huskies and Peacocks met in the regular season, St. Cloud State went on to beat the visitors by an 18-point margin, as the team took down Upper Iowa 92-74 in front of 1300 loyal fans in Halenbeck Hall. Brindley Theisen (St. Cloud, Minn. / St. Cloud Cathedral) became the 42nd player in program history to reach the 1000-point milestone in that game and he tied the school-record for three point field goals made in a single game with eight.
1 – The Huskies hold an impressive 5-1 record in the first round of the NSIC/Stanford Health Tournament in the last six seasons. In fact, the team's only loss in the opening round game at the hands of Upper Iowa in 2015-16. Despite a double-double from then freshman Gage Davis (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook) and strong shooting from the rest of the team, St. Cloud State fell to the Peacocks 87-80. Despite the loss, Davis did make a little bit of history that night, as his 24-points against Upper Iowa allowed him to surpass Dan Hagen and break the school record for points scored by a freshman (570), a record Davis still holds to this day.
4th – This marks the fourth meeting between the Huskies and Peacocks in the NSIC/Stanford Health Tournament since Upper Iowa joined the league in 2003. Unfortunately, the last three meetings haven't gone well for St. Cloud State. The Peacocks have certainly had the Huskies number, as they have a perfect 3-0 record against St. Cloud State in NSIC tournament games.
5 – Thanks to five years of success, current head coach Matt Reimer is just five wins away from reaching a milestone of his own. In five year with St. Cloud State Reimer has posted an overall record of 95-58, putting him just five wins away from the 100 win milestone. More impressively, since taking over in 2013-14, Reimer has posted a 70-40 mark in NSIC play.
199 – Senior forward Sean Smith (Seville, Spain / Canarias Basketball Academy) is just one block shy of recording the 200th of his career with the Huskies. In just two seasons with St. Cloud State, Smith has played in 61 games and averaged an impressive 3.3 blocks per game average, allowing him to break multiple school records in less than two seasons with the program.
