#1 St. Cloud State men's hockey picks up extra point with OT goal by Ryan Poehling

In a gritty performance by the #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (20-4-3, 12-2-3 NCHC), the Huskies battled to a 2-2 overtime tie at home against Colorado College (11-13-4, 5-8-3 NCHC) on Friday, Feb. 8 in St. Cloud, Minn.  SCSU finished the night with the extra league point as Ryan Poehling scored in the 3x3 OT session at the 1:00 mark.
The Huskies jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first period with a goal at 1:17 by Nick Poehling. Â The solo assist on the play was provided by Jack Ahcan. Â The goal was Nick Poehling's third of the season and it was Ahcan's 19th assist of the campaign.
The Tigers rallied at 6:02 of the first period with an unassisted goal by Trevor Gooch to tie the game at 1-1. Â CC took a 2-1 lead in the contest with a goal by Erik Middendorf at 9:38 of the first, which included assists from Cole McCaskill and Ben Copeland.
The game quickly settled into a defensive battle for the remainder of the first, second and much of the third period.  The Huskies forced the OT session when Jack Poehling scored his seventh goal of the year at 8:17 with assists from Ryan Poehling and Spencer Meier.  This was Ryan Poehling's team leading 20th assist of the season and it was Meier seventh assist of 2018-19.
In the first overtime period, SCSU outshot the TIgers 4-1 but the game still remained tied at the game's official end.  In the 3x3 overtime session, SCSU earned the extra league point with a power play marker by Ryan Poehling at 1:00 as Robby Jackson and Jimmy Schuldt provided assists on the play.
On the night, SCSU outshot CC by a 35-25 margin with David Hrenak making 23 saves for the Huskies and Alex LeClerc posting 33 saves in the game for CC.  Hrenak moved his season record to 16-3-2 with the decision.  On the power play, SCSU was 0-2 and the Huskies were a perfect 3-3 on the penalty kill vs. CC.
