3/1/2019 5:05:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Things are rolling for the St. Cloud State University men's basketball team. After a dominant win over Upper Iowa in the opening round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC)/Sandford Health Tournament, the Huskies advanced to the quarterfinal round for the second consecutive season and will face Wayne State College at 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 3.
St. Cloud State and Wayne State will face off on Saturday at the Stanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where the remainder of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament will take place. The winner of the quarterfinal game will advance to play the winner of Bemidji State University and Southwest Minnesota State at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, March 4.
Tickets for the NSIC/Stanford Health Tournament are $18 for adults and $9 for students, while children five and under are free. The cost covers admission to both games in a single session.
Fans who can't make the trek to South Dakota can follow the Huskies along online via live stats, video and WJON's live radio broadcast. Score updates can also be found on St. Cloud State men's basketball's official Twitter page (@SCSUmensbball).
Here are the five things to know before Sunday's game:
175 – The Huskies and Wildcats scored a combined 175 points in their opening round wins on Wednesday night. Wayne State defeated Mary in the first round on Wednesday 84-62, while St. Cloud State defeated Upper Iowa 91-72.
3rd – This will be the third consecutive year the Huskies and Wildcats will face each other in the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament. However, this is the first time the two teams have met past the first round. For the last two seasons, St. Cloud State has hosted Wayne State in the first round of the NSIC Tournament and went 2-0 in those last two meetings. In 2016-17, the Huskies defeated the Wildcats 92-78 before running away with an 81-57 victory in 2017-18.
1st – This is not the same team St. Cloud State hosted in 2016-17 and 2017-18 in the first round of the NSIC/Sandford Health Tournament. Wayne State was one of the top teams in the NSIC in 2018-19, as the Wildcats finished in a three-way tie for first place in the NSIC South Division. Wayne State was also the only top-seed from the South to win its first round playoff game, as both Minnesota State and Augustana dropped their opening round games.
46 – The Huskies were victories in the lone meeting between the two teams this season, thanks in large part to a career performance from senior guard Gage Davis (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook). Davis led St. Cloud State to a 91-79 win over Wayne State by scoring a career-high 46 points on 18-25 (.720) shooting from the floor and a 9-9 mark from the free throw line. The Huskies also saw double-digit performances from Brindley Theisen (St. Cloud, Minn. / St. Cloud Cathedral) and Jace Kitchen (Dekalb, Ill. / Dekalb), who scored 15 and 20 points respectively.
3 – Davis and Theisen were two of the three St. Cloud State seniors who earned All-Conference honors from the NSIC this past week. Davis became the second player in program history to be named the NSIC's Player of the Year and was the first player in program history to earn First Team All-NSIC honors four times in his career. Senior forward Sean Smith (Seville, Spain / Canarias Basketball Academy) was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year and earned Second Team All-Conference honors, while Theisen was a Second Team All-NSIC honoree.
Bonus number:
4 – St. Cloud State and Wayne State are two of four teams who sent both the men's and women's programs to the quarterfinal round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament. In addition to the Huskies and Wildcats, Bemidji State and Sioux Falls sent both its men's and women's basketball teams to Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
