#1 St. Cloud State men's hockey rallies to score 5-4 win at #10 WMU

A series of three unanswered goals in the third period helped the #1 ranked St. Cloud State men's hockey team (24-4-3, 16-2-3 NCHC) gain a 5-4 come from behind victory at #10 Western Michigan University (18-12-1, 11-9-1 NCHC) on Friday, Mar. 1 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The Huskies' Robby Jackson scored the game winning goal at 19:45 of the third period with assists from Patrick Newell and Blake Lizotte. The goal was Jackson's 15th of the season and it helped offset a 4-2 deficit the Huskies' faced with 10:00 left in the final period of play.
The game opened in SCSU's favor as Newell scored his 17th goal of the season at 1:18 of the first period with assists from Lizotte and Jackson. The score stood at 1-0 in SCSU's favor until Western Michigan broke the shutout at 3:29 of the second period with a goal by Paul Washe. The Broncos pushed their lead to 2-1 with a goal by Dawson DiPietro at 15:01 of the second before a third period goal at 2:43 by Austin Rueschhoff made it 3-1.
SCSU's Jimmy Schuldt had a quick reply to the third WMU goal as he notched an unassisted goal at 2:52 of the third period to close the gap to 3-2. This was Schuldt's ninth goal of the season.
WMU rallied once again with a goal at 9:42 of the third period before the Huskies' turned on the burners in the second half of the final period of play. Easton Brodzinski started the comeback at 10:21 of the third with his 11th goal of the season. Micah Miller and Sam Hentges each had assists on the play that made it 4-3.
Jackson knotted the score at 4-4 with his 14th goal of the year at 17:08 of the third with assists from Blake Lizotte and Newell. The stage was then set for Jackson's epic game winner that provided the Huskies with their 24th win of the campaign.
On the night, WMU outshot the Huskies 40-26 as David Hrenak made 36 saves in the match to gain the win. He is now 19-3-2 on the season for SCSU. On the power play, SCSU was 0-2 and the Huskies were perfect once again on the penalty kill at 4-of-4.
The two teams will complete their weekend series in Kalamazoo with a 6:05 p.m. CT game at the Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday, March 2. Fans can listen to the game on The River 96.7 FM and they can watch the action on NCHC.tv/scsu
