The #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (23-4-3, 15-2-3 NCHC) will be back on the road once again with a trip to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich. on March 1-2. The Huskies will battle the Broncos at the Lawson Arena at WMU and both NCHC games are scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. (ET).

IN THE POLLS:  The Huskies received a #1 ranking in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey weekly poll.  In the USCHO.com poll this week, the Huskies earned a #1 ranking.  
NCHC CHAMPS: The Huskies claimed the 2018-19 NCHC championship with a 5-0 win at Omaha on Feb. 23. Goals in that contest were notched by Jack Poehling, Robby Jackson, Jacob Benson, Blake Lizotte and Patrick Newell. The win pushed SCSU's record to 23-4-3, 15-2-3 NCHC and it gave the Huskies a total of 50 points, enough to clinch the outright title with four regular season games left. David Hrenak had 30 saves in the win, which was his fourth shutout of the campaign...SCSU opened the weekend in Omaha with a 4-1 victory on Feb. 22. Sam Hentges opened the night's scoring in the first, while Ryan Poehling added the PP game winner at 17:03 of the first period. Nick Poehling and Ryan Poehling added two more goals in the second period to ice the contest. Hrenak had 22 saves in the game for SCSU as the Huskies outshot the Mavs 31-23.
ALL-TIME LEADER: SCSU senior Jimmy Schuldt is now the team's all-time lead for points by a defenseman with 110. Schuldt now has 36g/74a for 110 points. He moves past Kelly Hultgren, who had 28g/79a from 1991-95. Schuldt is the team's all-time leader for goals by a defenseman with 36 and power play goals by a defenseman with 19 during his career...on the topic of Schuldt, he currently leads all NCHC blueliners with 27 points (8g/19a) this season. He ranks 13th in the nation with .90 ppg among DI defensemen.
AS A PLAYER AND AS A COACH: SCSU assistant coach Nick Oliver is the first person to win the Penrose Cup both as a player (2013-14 with the Huskies) and as a coach (2018-19 with the Huskies).
NATIONAL LEADERS: The following is a rundown of where the Huskies rank in the current NCAA stat categories: Power Play - 12th (22.9%), Offense - 2nd (3.87 gpg), Defense - 7th (2.03 gapg), Scoring Margin - 1st (1.83 margin), Winning Percentage - 1st (.817), Penalty Kill - 4th (87.6%).
NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Huskies are 13-0-1 at home this season and 14-1-1 in games played in the state of Minnesota. Of note, SCSU's best record at home in a single season was a 14-1-3 mark in 1993-94. SCSU was 16-3-1 at home in 2001-02 and 16-3-1 at home in 1996-97. In addition, SCSU was 16-3-2 at home in 2017-18 and 13-3-0 at home in 2013-13. On the road this season, SCSU owns an 10-4-2.
AWARD WINNERS: David Hrenak was named the NCHC Goalie of the Week and Jimmy Schuldt was named the NCHC Defenseman of the Week on Feb. 25. Hrenak posted his 4th shutout of the season on Feb. 23 at Omaha. He now has 3rd in the team record for most shutouts along with Grant Sjerven (who had four in 1993-94). The team's season shutout leader is Scott Meyer with seven in 1999-00. In his career, Hrenak now has seven shutouts and that ranks third in the team records along with Dean Weasler, who had seven from 1998-02. Meyer owns the team career record with nine shutouts from 1996-01. Hrenak leads all DI goalies this winter with a .826 win rate (18-3-2) and ranks sixth with four shutouts.
RANKINGS: In the all-important Pairwise rankings, St. Cloud State and UMass received the top spot with a 58 apiece. In the KRACH DI rankings, SCSU was rate #1 with a rating of 498.2. Of note, SCSU has gained 13 NCAA bids since 1989 and the Huskies have advanced to NCAA tournament play five times since 2013 (2018, 2016, 2015, 2014 and 2013).
HOW LOW CAN YOU GO: SCSU has allowed just 61 goals (2.03 goals allowed per game) this season in 30 games played. The current team record for fewest goals allowed in a season is 90, which was set in 2015-16 over 41 games (2.20 goals allowed per game). On the other hand, SCSU has scored 116 goals this season (3.87 goals per game). The Huskies set a team record in 2001-02 with 179 goals scored (4.26 goals per game).
AND A FEW MORE ITEMS: Jacob Benson snapped a 22-game goal scoring drought with his marker on Feb. 23. He now has three goals this season and 26 career goals at SCSU...Patrick Newell paces SCSU's with a +25 on the plus/minus and Robby Jackson leads the team with 100 shots on goal...SCSU is 17-0-2 when it allows two-or-less goals in a game this season and 20-0-1 if it scores three-or-more goals in a game this season.

WORLD JUNIOR SPOTLIGHT: Forward Ryan Poehling helped Team USA gain a second place finish at the 2019 IIHF World Juniors.  Poehling was voted the MVP in the tournament, makde the tourney All-Star Team and was voted the Best Forward in the tournament.  He had five goals and three assists in tournament play (3rd best).  Poehling competed for Team USA at the World Juniors in 2018, where Team USA won a Bronze Medal.  Poehling joined Mark Parrish (1996 & 1997) as the other Husky who has played in two World Junior tourneys for Team USA.  A total of 10 SCSU players have skated for Team USA at the IIHF World Juniors since 1991.
OPPONENT NOTES:  Western Michigan is led by sixth year head coach Andy Murray. A 10-year head coaching veteran in the NHL, Murray posted a 333-278-58-71 career record that included stints with the Los Angeles Kings (1999-2006) and the St. Louis Blues (2006-10). He also served as an assistant coach with Philadelphia, Minnesota (North Stars) and Winnipeg (Jets) during his pro coaching career..SCSU is 14-4-4 in the all-time series against WMU...SCSU is 4-0-1 in the last five outings against WMU and SCSU is 5-0-3 in play against WMU at the Lawson Arena in the series, which dates back to a 4-2 win in St. Cloud on Dec. 29, 2011...SCSU is 9-4-1 in games played against WMU at the HBNHC..Jimmy Schuldt has scored 14 points vs. WMU during his career (4g/10a)...Josh Passolt ranks second this season at WMU with 16g/12a.  He is the newphew of former SCSU hockey standout Jeff Passolt.  Hugh McGing leads WMU with 16g/14a and 30 points.
