NCAA TeamWorks Competition Report
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – For the second consecutive year, the St. Cloud State University athletics department was recognized as one of the top in the nation in terms of community service. The Huskies recorded another top-10 finish in the NCAA Division II TeamWorks Helper Helper competition, as they were ranked 10th for their community service and outreach efforts during the 2018-19 school year.
St. Cloud State's men's and women's swimming and diving teams along with the NCAA champion SCSU wrestling team all ranked No. 1 in the nation in this year's HelperHelper rankings. Additionally, the Huskies' baseball (No. 3), football (No. 6), softball (No. 4) and women's track and field (No. 6) teams all-ranked in the top-10 in Division II in their respective sports. Of note, the SCSU men's swimming and diving team ranked second among all NCAA Division II men's athletic teams in the HelperHelper standings in 2018-19.
"It is an honor for our program to be selected as the top wrestling program in NCAA DII with the most community service hours," said head wrestling coach Steve Costanzo. "We have always taken pride in our program to instill and produce individuals with high character and life skills. We look forward to giving back to our communities and showing our gratitude for the opportunities that have been given to us."
NCAA TeamWorks, in partnership with Helper Helper, launched the community service competition in 2014-15 to recognize student-athletes for their community service efforts throughout an academic year. The competition runs from September to May, and the winning schools/teams are determined by the number of service hours completed plus the participation from student-athletes.
"This type of recognition is a great reward and honor for our student-athletes at St. Cloud State," SCSU swim and dive coach Jeff Hegle said. "Our student-athletes understand the importance of giving back to the community, and the number one ranking we received is truly a testimony to all the hard work they put into our teams' community service efforts."
At the Division II levels, teams logged 222,114 hours during the school year in 6049 service opportunities. St. Cloud State, as a department, notched a top-10 finish thanks with its work with local youth sports programs and senior living facilities as well as volunteer hours with major organizations such as the St. Cloud Miracle League, Special Olympics Polar Plunge, Make-A-Wish and Toys for Tots.
