The Minnesota Whitecaps of the National Women's Hockey League announced the re-signing of former St. Cloud State forward Haylea Schmid on Wednesday. A four-year member of the Huskies women's hockey team, Schmid wrapped up her collegiate career with a 21-point 2012-13 season while wearing the "A." Schmid played in 24 games for the Whitecaps last season, piling up four goals and nine assists for 13 points while recording a +11 in the plus/minus.
"I'm looking forward to a fun year with the Whitecaps and fighting to bring the Isobel Cup back to the State of Hockey," Schmid told NWHL media.
Schmid will be playing her fourth season with Minnesota once the 2020-21 campaign begins. The Oak Grove, Minnesota native played in six games in 2018-19 and was part of an Isobel Cup championship-winning team. Schmid is one of three former St. Cloud State Huskies to re-sign with the Whitecaps this offseason, joining Meaghan Pezon and Lisa Martinson.
Her first taste of professional hockey came with ERC Ingolstadt in 2013-14, putting up 19 points across 24 games in the German Frauen-Bundesliga.
The Minnesota Whitecaps began play in the National Women's Hockey League in 2019 and promptly won the Isobel Cup Championship. In 2019-20, the Whitecaps had again advanced to the Cup Final before the COVID-19 pandemic led to the championship game being canceled. Following the disbanding of the Western Women's Hockey League in 2011, Minnesota had operated as an independent professional team for the ensuing seven seasons.
Established in 2015, the NWHL was the first professional women's hockey league in North America to pay its players. The mission of the league is to fuel the continued growth of the sport and brand of pro women's hockey. The league is made up of the Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, Connecticut Whale, Metropolitan Riveters, Minnesota Whitecaps, and the Toronto Six.
