St. Cloud State Baseball welcomes 16 newcomers to the roster in the 2021 season. Our next edition of "Meet the Newcomers" features freshman righthander Isaiah Katz of Seymour, Wisconsin.
A standout pitcher for coach Mike Johnson at Fall Creek High School, Katz posted a 3-0 record in 2019 and gained All-Conference honors as a junior. He notched 44 strikeouts in 23.0 innings pitched for Fall Creek in 2019. As a sophomore, Katz was 4-2 with 69 strikeouts and also earned All-Conference accolades. A highlight for his 2019 season was tossing a 14-strikeout no-hitter. He played in the 2018 PBR Futures game. Isaiah is the son of Tom and Angie Katz.
Huskies Athletics: Why did you choose St. Cloud State University?
Isaiah Katz:Â I chose St. Cloud State because of the winning culture they've had over the years. I liked what the coaches told me on my recruiting visit and after that I knew I wanted to come here.Â
HA: When did you decide you wanted to play collegiate baseball?
IK:Â I decided I wanted to play college baseball in middle school. I've played the game all my life and realized that I didn't want baseball to end after high school.Â
HA: How did you go about staying sharp baseball-wise during the COVID-19 related halting of the 2020 season?
IK:Â I stayed sharp baseball wise during COVID by just getting to parks or open fields to work on throwing as much as possible. My dad and I created a makeshift lifting setup out of some logs from our back woods so I could continue to lift while gyms were closed.Â
HA: SCSU Baseball has built a strong tradition of tapping into the state of Wisconsin, with recent Wisco-to-Minnesota imports including Matt Osterberg, Jack Habeck, John Nett, Mitch Mallek, Cal Giese and Michael Jurgella. How much of an impact did the success of fellow Wisconsin-born players have on your decision to come to St. Cloud State?
IK: The fact that there were Wisconsin players on the team was nice because it in a way gave me a sense of being at home knowing there were people who grew up in the same state as I had.Â
HA: How have the upperclassmen helped your transition to the college setting?
IK: The upperclassmen have done a great job in transitioning me into the college setting. From the moment I walked on campus I was welcomed and felt a part of the team. They helped me as well as the other freshman with any questions we needed about college life.Â
HA: Where are some of your favorite places to visit in and around Fall Creek?
IK:Â Fall Creek is a very small town with not much to do besides farming, high school sports and fishing. So when I have time off I like to go to the Fall Creek pond and fish for bass.Â
HA:Â Who is an important person in your life that has helped you reach the collegiate level?
IK: The two people who have helped me reach the collegiate level the most have been my parents. They have always supported me throughout my years of playing the sport and have guided me into being the player/person I am today.Â
HA: What are some athletic goals you hope to achieve while at St. Cloud State?
IK: Getting to the playoffs and making a world series run.Â
