ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team played its final regular season home game in Halenbeck Hall on Saturday, February 15. The Huskies were hoping to send their five seniors off with a bang, as they hosted Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) North Division rival Northern State in a key conference contest. Unfortunately, St. Cloud State fell short Saturday evening, as Northern State took the final meeting between the two teams by a final score of 88-68.
The Huskies trailed 50-35 at halftime despite a big first half from first year Caleb Donaldson (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington). The freshman tallied a team-leading 15 points in the first quarter, aided by 5-6 shooting from the floor and a 5-6 mark from the free throw line. Jake Mussman (St. Cloud, Minn. / St. Cloud Tech) was also unstoppable in the opening half, as he went 3-4 from the floor, including a 2-2 mark from three-point range, to finish with eight first half points.
Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) provided the highlight of the game in the second half, as he become the 43rd player in school history to score 1000 career points in their St. Cloud State career. With his three-pointer midway through the half, Marshall tallied his 1001 point as a Husky, allowing him to join elite company in the 1000 point club. Additionally, Marshall helped St. Cloud State continue its 1000-point membership streak, as this marks the third consecutive year the Huskies have seen at least one student-athlete eclipse the milestone on their home court.
Despite double-digits from Donaldson, Marshall and Mussman, the Huskies were unable to close the 2019-20 home season with a "W", as the Wolves won by a final score of 88-68. Donaldson was the team's leading scorer, tallying 20 points on 8-11 shooting, while Marshall closed the game with 12. Mussman had a game to remember as well, closing his career at Halenbeck Hall with 11 points thanks to a perfect 3-3 night from beyond the arc.
With the loss, St. Cloud State's record now stands at 13-13 and the team is 10-10 in NSIC play. The Huskies will close the 2019-20 season on the road, as they face Bemidji State at 7:30 p.m. in Bemdiji, Minnesota.
