SCSU men's hockey edged by Minnesota Duluth, 4-1

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (13-14-6, 10-11-2 NCHC) lost this evening by a score of 4-1 to #5 Minnesota-Duluth (21-10-2, 16-5-2 NCHC) at Amsoil Arena in Duluth, Minnesota.
St. Cloud State opened the game's scoring at 8:16 of the first period with a goal by Zach Okabe. He was assisted on the play by Jami Krannila and Jack Ahcan. This was Okabe's seventh goal of the season, which puts him atop the goal scoring list for SCSU rookies in 2019-20.
The assist was the ninth of the season for Krannila and it was Ahcan's 18th assist of the season, which moves him into the team's assist scoring lead. A 2020 Hobey Baker and postseason honors candidate, Ahcan now has a team record 82 assists scored during his sterling career in the Granite City.
UMD knotted the score at 1-1 at 17:38 of the second period with a goal by Quinn Olson, which included assists from Jarod Hilderman and Noah Cates.
In the third period, UMD finally broke the deadlock at 2:08 with an unassisted goal by Koby Bender giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. UMD made it a two goal game when Cole Koepke tallied his 15th goal of the season at 12:10. Justin Richards was credited with the helper.
The Huskies pulled David Hrenak for an extra attacker late in the game but the Huskies were not able to put another puck past UMD goalie Hunter Shepard.
Minnesota Duluth closed out the scoring with an empty net goal from Koepke with 20 seconds remaining in the contest. Noah Cates assisted on the empty netter.
In the contest, UMD outshot the Huskies 35-23 as David Hrenak made 31 saves in the nets for SCSU. On the power play, SCSU was 0-3 and it was 2-2 on the penalty kill.
The Huskies and Bulldogs will complete their final NCHC regular season series in Duluth with a 7:07 p.m. game on Saturday, March 7.
