SCSU celebrates a goal vs. UMD on Jan. 2

#6 St. Cloud State men's hockey edged by #4 UMD in OT, 4-3

The #6 ranked St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (6-4-0, 6-4-0 NCHC) lost a close 4-3 overtime decision against #4 Minnesota Duluth (6-2-2, 6-2-2 NCHC) on Saturday, Jan. 2 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
In the Huskies' 2020-21 home opener, UMD opened the evening's scoring with an even strength goal by Tanner Laderoute at 1:36 of the first period. Later in the period, SCSU knotted the score at 1-1 with a power play marker by Easton Brodzinski at 16:54. He was assisted on the play by Veeti Miettinen and Nick Perbix.
The Bulldogs snapped back at 2:12 with a power play goal of their own by Nick Swaney to make the tally 2-1. The Huskies replied with two unanswered goals to make the score 3-2 heading into the third. SCSU's tied the contest at 2-2 with a power play goal by Miettinen at 10:57 of the second. This was his fifth goal of the season, while Perbix and Sam Hentges had assists on the play. Miettinen currently ranks fifth in the nation among DI rookies with five goals and 10 points this season.
SCSU completed its scoring on the day at 12:12 of the second period with the team's third PPG of the evening. Brodzinski posted the goal with assists from Nolan Walker and Perbix. On the evening, Brodzinski had two goals to push his season total to five goals, four assists and nine points. In four season with the Huskies, Brodzinski now has 47 goals, 42 assists and 89 points.
Perbix gained his playmaker status with three assists on the day. He now ranks number one among all Division I blueliners with 12 points this season (4g/8a) and a scoring rate of 1.20 PPG.
In the third period, UMD tied the contest at 3-3 with a power play marker by Kobe Roth at 4:33 that forced the OT session. In SCSU's third 3x3 overtime session of the season, UMD managed to gain the victory with a goal by Noah Cates at 2:00 of the OT period.
In the game, SCSU was outshot by the Bulldogs 31-22. David Hrenak was the Huskies' goalie of record with 27 saves in the contest and Ryan Fanti had 19 saves for UMD in the nets. On the power play, SCSU was 3-of-6 and UMD was 2-of-4.
The Huskies and Bulldogs will complete the weekend series at the HBNHC with a 4:07 p.m. game on Sunday, Jan. 3. Due to COVID-19 policies, fans will not be allowed to attend the game in person but they can watch it live on Spectrum Cable Channel 426/823 and NCHC.tv/scsu. Fans can listen to all the action on The River 96.7 FM and KVSC FM 88.1.
