ST. CLOUD, MINN. - The No. 6 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team is coming home.Â
After two weekends on the road, the Huskies (9-6-0, 9-6-0 NCHC) will host Miami University Friday, January 22 and Saturday, January 23 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Friday's game is slated to begin at 7:37 p.m. while puck drop is scheduled for 6:07 p.m. on Saturday.
At this time, no fans will be allowed to attend the game in person due to COVID-19 protocols at St. Cloud State University. Huskies hockey fans can follow along in a multitude of ways, as both games will stream on NCHC.tv and Fox9+ this weekend. Additionally, both games will be broadcasted on The River 96.7 FM and KVSC Fm 88.1, and live stats will be available at www.scsuhuskies.com.
Here are the five things to know before this weekend's men's hockey series against Miami:
8/11 - St. Cloud State enters Friday evening's competition riding an eight game win-streak against the RedHawks and an 11-game undefeated streak. In fact, the last time the Huskies suffered a loss at the hands of Miami occurred on March 10, 2018, when the RedHawks dealt St. Cloud State a 3-2 overtime setback. A stat even more impressive? The Huskies have posted a 17-1-2 record in their last 20 meetings against Miami, while head coach Brett Larson is 8-0-2 all-time against the Redhawks.Â
5th - Three different student-athletes scored goals in St. Cloud State's series against Western Michigan last weekend, including Kevin Fitzgerald (Hillsdale, Ill.) and Sam Hentges (New Brighton, Minn.). It was the fifth goal of the season for both Huskies, as they were the lone goal-scorers in the team's 6-2 Friday loss. It also counted as the 25th goal in Fitzgerald's career.Â
100 - David Hrenak (Povazska Bystrica, Slovakia) played in his 100th career game for St. Cloud State on Saturday, making him one of the longest tenured goalies in program history. In 100 career games, Hrenak has posted a 56-28-10 record with 2309 saves. His 56 wins are second all-time behind Brian Leitza (66), and his 2309 career saves rank third behind Leitza (3500) and Ryan Farager (2501).
13 - Miami last played hockey on January 9, 2021, meaning the RedHawks have unexpectedly had 13 days off from competition. Originally, Miami was scheduled to play Minnesota-Duluth in a series January 15-16 but saw the games cancelled due to a COVID-19 outbreak amongst the Bulldogs. Prior to the series, the RedHawks posted a 2-1-1 record in their first four games back after the NCHC Pod, and all four games were against the Huskies most recent opponent: the Western Michigan Broncos.Â
2 - Two of Miami's four wins this season have come on the road, as the RedHawks swept Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Michigan January 2 and 3. However, Miami has not won a game at the HBNHC since March of 2018, and St. Cloud State is 8-0-2 in the two teams' last 10 meetings. Last year, when the RedHawks visited the Huskies for their lone meeting of the season, St. Cloud Sate was victorious, posting a weekend sweep with 3-0 and 4-2 wins.Â
Bonus number:
6 - The Huskies were ranked No. 6 in both the USCHO.com and USA Hockey / USA TODAY Division I men's hockey polls this week. It marks the seventh consecutive week St. Cloud State has been ranked in the top-15/top-20 in the nation and the sixth consecutive week the Huskies have found themselves ranked in the top-10.Â
