Olivia Cvar scored her first goal of the season and Emma Polusny recorded 40 saves in St. Cloud State's (2-5-0, 2-5-0 WCHA) 2-1 loss on the road at No. 2 Minnesota (6-1-0, 6-1-0 WCHA) on Thursday evening. The Huskies were outshot 42-25 in the game.
SCSU blocked 15 shots, including a team and career-high three by freshman Mackenzie Bourgerie while Jenniina Nylund and Addi Scribner each added a pair. The Huskies' penalty kill stayed sharp by eliminating two Gopher power plays, one each in the first and second periods. Nylund led the way in the circle, winning a team-high 11 draws, and Klara Hymlarova paced the Huskies with seven shots on goal.
Following over 38 minutes of scoreless action, the Huskies went on their first power play of the game as a Gopher went to the box for a hook. Nylund found Cvar in the slot and the latter fired in her first goal of the season at the 1:29 mark, giving SCSU their first lead of the game and their first power play goal of the season. The goal happened to be the first special teams goal allowed by Minnesota in 2020-21, as the Gophers had killed their opponents' first 16 chances.
Minnesota's Grace Zumwinkle scored both Gopher goals in the third period at the 18:19 and 5:35 points, her sixth and seventh lamp lights of the season.
The Huskies and Gophers resume their three-game series at Ridder Arena on Saturday at 4:07 p.m. CST before heading to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Sunday at 3:07 p.m. CST. Both games can be heard on RadioX, Saturday's tilt will be broadcast on BTN+ and Sunday will be on FloHockey.
