Team Red captures 2021 Red/Black Fall World Series Championship

St. Cloud State Baseball's annual Red/Black Fall World Series came to an end last week as Rob "Doc" Swendra and Team Red earned a 4-1 series win.
"The Fall Red/Black World Series is a great time for the coaching staff to see what our players can do," said Swendra, "It gives us the opportunity to evaluate each player in a game situation – especially with the new Huskies – and this fall the team did not disappoint. Every game was played well and was very competitive."
Game One - Team Red 7, Team Black 4
Righthander Tommy Thompson earned the win with 4.0 innings of work for Team Red, followed by southpaw Luke Tupy tossing 5.0 frames to earn a save. Muskegon College transfer Mitchell Gumbko went 2-for-4 with a triple and drove in three, while Parker Savard went 2-for-3 with a double, scored twice and knocked in one.Â
Fabian Villegas worked a staff-high 4.0 frames for Team Black. Freshman Brayden Jacobson opened his collegiate career with a bang, going 1-for-3 with a homer. CJ Breen provided a multi-hit day while Tyler Schiller reached base twice and drove in one.
Game Two – Team Red 5, Team Black 4
In a game dominated by clutch hitting, Ero Wallin played the hero with a walk-off double for Team Red. Drew Bulson went 2-for-2 with an RBI triple, Sawyer Smith added a 2-for-3 day and Ethan Navratil doubled while driving in one.
Mason Primus homered for Team Black and worked a pair of innings on the mound.
Game Three – Team Red 2, Team Black 0
Luke Tupy, Tommy Thompson and Ethan Hanson each fired 3.0 scoreless innings for Team Red in a masterful pitching performance. John Nett and Max Gamm each went 2-for-4 in the win while Drew Bulson went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Senior Fabian Villegas worked 2.0 innings for Team Black followed by Eli Emerson. SCSU's righthander covered 2.1 frames while striking out three. Sam Riola went 1-for-4 with a double and Mason Diaz posted a 1-for-3 day.
Game Four – Team Black 2, Team Red 1
Team Black pushed the series to a fifth game as Ryan Duffy, Jack Habeck and Eli Emerson combined for a dominant performance. CJ Breen went 2-for-3 with a walk and blasted the game-winning RBI double. Tate Wallat stole a bag, went 1-for-3 and drove in a run while Jake Ince went 2-for-3.
Luke Tupy tossed 4.0 frames, Tommy Thompson worked 3.0 scoreless and Ethan Hansen went the final 2.0 for Team Red. John Nett reached base four times going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two stolen bases. Parker Savard added a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3.
Game Five – Team Red 7, Team Black 2
Freshman Owen Anderson threw 4.0 innings for Team Red to earn the win in relief while Isaiah Katz closed things out in the final frame. Drew Bulson scored two runs while going 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, Cameron Volmer drove in two with a double while Max Gamm and Ethan Navratil each homered. Mitchell Gumbko went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Easton Vertz worked 5.0 frames in relief for Team Black, Mason Primus went 1-for-2 with a home run while Sam Riola belted a double and stole a base as part of a 1-for-3 showing.
