
Men's swim and dive in fourth after opening day at GLIAC

HOLLAND, MICH. - The St. Cloud University men's swim and dive team got off to a rippling start at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Swimming and Diving Championships. After day one of the conference championships, the Huskies currently sit in fourth place as a team with 92 total points.
The highlight of the day came in the prelims of the 50m freestyle, where Abe Townley (White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake) not only clocked the fastest time, but also shattered his school record. The sophomore's time of 19.66 was not only the fastest time in prelims, but also broke the previous school record, also held by Townley, by .4. Townley would finish fifth in the event, as he swam a time of 20.42 in finals.
Several other St. Cloud State student-athletes performed well on the opening day of the GLIAC Championships. Senior David Clossey (Ramsey, Minn. / Anoka) opened the finals session with a tenth place finish in the 1000m freestyle thanks to his time of 9:44.33 in finals. Teammates Garrett Alleven (Marion, Kansas), Jayden Porter (Bismarck, N. D. / Century) and Andres Hernandez Garcia (Barcelona, Spain / Escola Ipsi) all finished in the top-16 in the 200 Individual Medley. Alleven finished tenth with a time of 1:54.34 while Porter came in 14th with a time of 1:55.37. Hernandez Garcia finished in 16th thanks to his time of 1:55.98.
Two Huskies finished in the top-8 in the 3-meter diving competition, helping boost St. Cloud State's score and vault the team into the top-5. Lucas Hammontree (Deerfield, Ill. / Deerfield) continued his strong freshman season with the Huskies, as he finished in seventh place with a score of 370.05. Right behind him in eighth was Evan Infante (Kenosha, Wis. / Indian Trail) who finished the competition with an 11 dive score of 356.45.
St. Cloud State additionally had a strong showing the final event of the day: the 200 yard medley relay. The team of Raf Hendricks (Berg En Terblijt, Netherlands / Stella Maris College), Porter, Alleven and Townley clocked a time of 1:30.20, which was good enough for a third place finish in the event.
Thanks to these and several other strong performances, the Huskies sit in fourth as a team with 92 total points. The GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships will resume at 10 a.m. ET on Thursday, with finals to follow around 6:30 p.m.
