HOLLAND, MICH. - The last day was the best day for the St. Cloud State University men's swim and dive team at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Swimming and Diving Championships. The Huskies finished the competition in fourth as a team tallying a four-day combined score of 402.5 points. Additionally, another program record fell as Raf Hendricks (Berg en Terblijt, Netherlands / Stella Maris College) was crowned a GLIAC Champion on the final day of competition.
Hendricks' spectacular week came to an end in the best way possible Saturday, as he won the 200 backstroke and broke the school record in the process. Hendricks entered finals as the top seed after swimming the fastest time in prelims at 1:45.85. He was even faster in finals, clocking a time of 1:45.23 to win the event by .5. The time also broke the school record he set earlier in the 2020-21 season.
The Huskies impressed in several other events Saturday evening, as they earned points in the 1650 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 breast and 400 yard freestyle relay. David Clossey (Ramsey, Minn. / Anoka) finished in tenth in the 1650 free, clocking a season best time of 16:39.06 in finals to earn points towards St. Cloud State's overall team score.
Jacob Swier (Parker, Colorado / Chaparral) was the lone Husky to score in the 100 freestyle race, finishing in the top-16 with his time of 46.98. Then, in the 200 breaststroke, Jayden Porter (Bismarck, North Dakota / Century) came in fourth with a time of 2:03.67, while Garrett Alleven (Marion, Kansas) finished in 13th with a time of 2:10.88.
St. Cloud State finished fifth in the final event of the week, the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Abe Townley (White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake), Nick Gehling (Cedar Falls, Iowa), Swier and Hendricks clocked a time of 3:05.71, good enough for a fifth place finish.
Thanks to these and several other performances, the Huskies finished fourth as a team with a combined four-day score of 402.5. St. Cloud State will return to competition at the NCAA Championships, which are scheduled March 17-20 in Birmingham, Alabama.
