
Huskies win sprint meet with Saint John’s

ST. CLOUD, MINN. - It's a sprint to the finish line for the St. Cloud State University men's swim and dive team. After competing in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) meet two weeks ago, the Huskies added two sprint meets to the schedule as prep for the NCAA Championships and defeated Saint John's University 59-28 Monday afternoon in the Halenbeck Hall Aquatic Center.
St. Cloud State finished first in four of the five races Monday afternoon, including the 50 yard backstroke, 50 yard breaststroke, 50 yard butterfly and 50 yard freestyle. Raf Hendricks (Berg en Terblijt, Netherlands / Stella Maris College) took first in two events, the 50 yard back and 50 yard free, with times of 24.41 and 21.92 respectively. Garrett Alleven (Marion, Kansas) finished first in the 50 yard breast with a time of 29.54, while Abe Townley (White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake) won the 50 yard fly thanks to a time of 22.89.
Several other Huskies found success in the pool Monday evening. In addition to winning the 50 yard breaststroke, Alleven finished third in the backstroke competition with a time of 26.01 while his teammate Parker Kabe (Buffalo, Minn. / Buffalo) finished fifth with a time of 27.86. Kabe also finished fifth in the 50 yard breaststroke, while Sam Deitrich (Appleton, Wis. / Appleton North) finished fourth in the same race.
In addition to Townley, four other St. Cloud State swimmers swam in the 50 yard butterfly. Payton Rudeen (Rothschild, Wis. / DC Everest) finished second with a time of 25.23, while Jacob Swier (Parker, Colorado / Chaparral) took fourth with a time of 26.75. Deitrich and Jayden Porter (Bismarck, N.D. / Century) also competed in the race, finishing sixth and seventh respectively.
Only Huskies competed in the 50 yard freestyle, led by Hendricks top finish. Townley, Joe Esterle (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha South), Porter, Otto Belschner (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville North) and Evan Infante (Kenosha, Wis. / Indian Trail) all competed in the race, rounding out second through sixth place.
St. Cloud State won the race 59-28 thanks to these outstanding performances. The Huskies will return to the pool on Tuesday, March 2 for a dual meet with Saint John's and Saint Ben's. First swim is scheduled for 5 p.m. with diving to follow.
