St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (6-12-1, 6-12-1 WCHA) closed their 2020-21 campaign with a 4-1 win over Bemidji State (2-16-2, 2-16-2 WCHA) on Saturday afternoon, earning a season-ending sweep of the Beavers. The sweep marks the Huskies' first in conference play since their 2017-18 season-ending sweep of Bemidji State.
Senior Emma Polusny stopped 26 of the 27 shots she faced, guiding SCSU to the win. The Huskies penalty kill was outstanding, eliminating all four Beavers chances on the advantage.
Bemidji State opened the scoring four and a half minutes into the opening period, a lead that would not last much longer than half a minute as Mackenzie Bourgerie took a pass from Taytum Geier and split a pair of defenders before firing the puck past the Beavers tender at the 5:05 mark. Ten minutes later, Taylor Lind carried the puck behind the BSU net towards the right corner boards and fired a beautiful centering feed to Laura Kluge uncovered in the slot. Kluge banged home a one-timer to put SCSU up 2-1 at 14:04 in the first.
Early on in the second, Allie Cornelius rifled a wrister off the goaltender's shoulder that carried on into the back of the net, scoring her second goal of the season and stretching the Huskies' lead to two. SCSU outshot the Beavers 7-6 in the second and killed off two Bemidji State power plays.
Shots were even at 10 a piece in the third, as the Huskies again killed off a pair of penalties in a hotly contested frame. Jenniina Nylund put the game on ice with a power play goal with 4:35 left to play in regulation, her team-leading seventh of the season, with Adela Skrdlova and Hannah Bates picking up assists.
Skrdlova recorded her first career two-assist night, while Bates, Lind, Geier, Nicole Ness and Emma Bigham each tallied one helper.
The Huskies went 26-24 in the circle, led by Nylund's 12-7 (63.2%) showing.
St. Cloud State finishes their season 6-12-1, outperforming last season's WCHA win-loss record by four wins, good for sixth place in the always-rugged WCHA.
