GLOUCESTER, MASS. - The 2020-21 academic year brought on plenty of challenges for the St. Cloud State University men's and women's hockey teams. The Huskies rose to the occasion both on and off the ice and were rewarded for their work late Monday afternoon by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA). A combined nine members of the St. Cloud State hockey teams were recognized as Krampade All-American Scholars for their achievements in the classroom, the organization announced on July 19.
Chase Brand (Nevis, Minn. / Madison), Kevin Fitzgerald (Hinsdale, Ill. /Aberdeen), and Thomas Rocco (Midlothian, Virginia / Aberdeen) represented the men's hockey team, while Allie Cornelius (St. Cloud, Minn. / St. Cloud Icebreakers), Emma Gentry (Alpena, Michigan / Honeybaked 19U), Allison Green (Anchorage, Alaska / Belle Tire 19U), Laura Kluge (Berlin, Germany / Linkoping HC), Emma Polusny (Mound, Minn. Mound-Westonka) and Kenzie Wylie (Ham Lake, Minn. / Blaine) were the women's team members honored with the exclusive award. Brand, Kluge, Polusny and Wylie are all multi-year recipients, while Cornelius, Gentry and Green are all first-time honorees.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the AHCA changed its requirements for student-athletes to garner All-American Scholar distinction. In 2020-21, student-athletes must have earned a 3.60+ GPA in both academic semesters regardless of whether or not their hockey team played during the season. The minimum 40 game participation requirement was waived this past season.
The six women's honorees marks the most in program history, according to available records, and helped the Western Collegiate Hockey Conference (WCHA) land a record 81 individuals on the AHCA Krampa All-American Scholars list. The National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) saw 62 student-athletes receive All-American Scholar distinction, including the three Huskies. Every team in both conference had at least one student-athlete receive the elite honor.
