ST. CLOUD, MINN. - They say there's no rest for the weary, the wicked or the St. Cloud State University volleyball team. After opening Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play over the weekend, the Huskies hit the road Tuesday for yet another conference match against Bemidji State University.
St. Cloud State could not have asked for a better start to the NSIC season, as the team will enter Tuesday night's match with a 2-0 conference record after upending Augustana and #5 Wayne State over the weekend. Bemidji State, on the other hand, is struggling. The Beavers are winless through their first 10 matches of 2021 and lost their first conference matches of the year 3-1 (SMSU) and 3-0 (USF).
First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Bemidji, Minnesota, and both live stats and video will be available for the match. Score updates will also be made to the team's official Twitter account (@scsuhuskies_vb) when possible.
Here are the five things to know before the Huskies take on the Beavers:
20 - St. Cloud State rose to No. 20 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll after beating both the Vikings and nationally ranked Wildcats last weekend. The Huskies needed five sets to take down Augustana on Friday before taking down Wayne State in 3-1 on Saturday. St. Cloud State was one of six NSIC teams ranked in the AVCA Division II Top-25 and one of seven schools to receive votes.
5.22/.387/3.67 - No, those aren't coordinates to secret treasure off the coast of Barbados. Those are Kenzie Foley's (Sergeant Bluff, Iowa / Sergeant Bluff-Luton) numbers from the past weekend. The sophomore outside hitter was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week after hitting .387 as a six-rotation player and averaging 5.22 kills and 3.67 digs per set.
2.33 - Foley wasn't the only Husky putting up big numbers last weekend. Junior middle blocker Phebie Rossi (Rapid City, S.D. / Stevens) was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week after a weekend in which she averaged a career-high 2.23 blocks per set and wracked up 21 total, two solo and 19 assists. Rossi recorded a season-high 11 blocks in St. Cloud State's 3-2 win over Augustana Friday before adding 10 in the 3-1 win over Wayne State on Saturday. She currently ranks fourth, seventh and eighth all-time in single-match blocks.
29.5 - Rossi wasn't the only big-time blocker for the Huskies this past weekend. The team tallied 29.5 total blocks in two NSIC matches, including a season-high 15.5 in the five set win over Augustana. So far this season, St. Cloud State is 4-0 in matches with 10+ total blocks and are 3-3 in all other matches.
1 - Bemidji State may be looking for its first win of 2021, but the Beavers gave Southwest Minnesota State some trouble in their conference opener on Friday. After falling behind 2-0, Bemidji State stole the third set from the No. 8 ranked team in the nation by a score of 26-24. Anna Averkamp led with 11 kills for the Beavers, while Rylee Pompa hit .667 with six kills in nine attempts.
