SCSU responds well after rocky opening period in 4-2 loss to Minnesota
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Hockey bounced back from a difficult opening stretch but erase a four-goal deficit in a 4-2 loss to No. 2 Minnesota on Homecoming at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
After falling behind 4-0 late in the first period, St. Cloud State's defense locked in to hold the Gophers scoreless the rest of the way. An aggressive forecheck kept Minnesota's chances to a minimum in the second, with SCSU allowing just nine shots on goal.
Klára Hymlárová struck first for the Huskies with under two minutes to go in the middle frame, taking a puck off the end boards back up to the crease and throwing it past the right blocker. Olivia Cvar would make it a two-goal game with eight ticks remaining, snatching up a Jenniina Nylund pass off the side of the net and poking it through for her first goal of the season.
JoJo Chobak turned away 32 of 36 shots on the evening, including all 17 she faced in the final period.
Turning Point
Four goals in the game's first 15 minutes of play staked Minnesota to a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Gophers scored on half of their first eight shots, buzzing early before the Huskies found their footing in the defensive zone.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Brian Idalski
"First of all, falling behind 4-0 in the first is not great. We needed our best effort for 60 minutes, but I was proud of the group. Just focusing on the process, competing, the details, to not quit – that's a team that can blow your doors off if you don't give your complete effort. I was proud that we continued to battle and didn't focus on the fact that they came out and played really well early."
On adjustments made at the first intermission... "We talked about the details and some of the things we discussed over the course of the week – they are lethal in transition. If the weakside isn't coming back to help out on D, they're going to burn you in transition. They did that tonight with a couple of nice transition goals. We can't give those up. We have to be better in managing risk and seeing danger in transition because they're so quick and so talented."
On the aggressive nature of the series opener... "There's a very interesting phenomena with a team like ours – I wouldn't say teams are shocked, but they just don't expect you to compete. They expect you to roll over. Instead, we push back. That was a real hockey game. It was two teams that were starting to understand what it means to play hockey."
On the long change in the second... "I definitely thought we managed pucks much better. Understanding the risk in line changes, not getting exposed with our details there was much better. Going into that third we were pretty even in shots, and it felt good to see us competing and battling there – obviously we saw some growth."
