Foley puts away 18 kills while Rossi hits .484 with 16 kills and six digs
ABERDEEN, S.D. – No. 7 St. Cloud State Volleyball leaned on stellar middle play to take down Northern State in four sets on Saturday evening at Wachs Arena.
Phebie Rossi hit .484 with 16 kills and six blocks while Sam Zimmerman added nine kills and four blocks on .375 hitting as Emma Berran picked her spots well, recording a 50-assist night. Kenzie Foley added an 18-kill, 16-dig double-double from the pin alongside 13 and 11 from Linsey Rachel.
Keely Kurschner had another strong evening with 21 digs, anchoring a defense that forced Northern into 21 attacking errors.
Turning Point
After dropping the first set, St. Cloud State found their offensive rhythm to hit .333 in the second, .273 in the third and .311 in the fourth to take all three sets. The Huskies stayed in system and set their middles well, adding offense at the pins when needed.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Chad Braegelmann
"It was a big win for us. Northern has had a lot of success in this conference over the last five years, and while they may have struggled at times are certainly a fantastic team – just last night sweeping Duluth. I thought our women did a really good job after set one, really taking control the entire time in set two and three, then most of set four. They showed some resiliency to bounce back from some calls and challenges in the fourth that didn't necessarily go our way. The women made just enough plays to make it happen – I'm proud of their effort today."
"We ended up passing over a 2.3, which is our goal. That gave us some good opportunities. I thought Emma did a really nice job of getting our hitters one-on-one in different situations. Sam was one kill away from getting double-digit kills herself, we were very efficient. Not a lot of errors, we did a good job of covering and getting some second swings. We did a much better job of limiting our errors offensively."
"Keely has done a great job for us all year. Defenders in general don't get a lot of accolades, unless they have 30 or 40 digs. Keely did a great job again for us today. She finds ways to keep plays alive, keep us in some points. That's been a big part of our success. And also in the passing game, she leads our team in aces, she's been a very well-rounded player."
