SERIES HISTORY
- Old WCHA foes, St. Cloud State and Colorado College will meet for the 121st and 122nd times this weekend in Colorado Sprints. St. Cloud State leads the current series between the two schools, 61-50-9, and has dominated the series over the last decade, posting a 28-5-3 mark since the 2012-13 season.
- This will be the Huskies second trip to newly built Ed Robson Arena, after St. Cloud State took five out six points away from Colorado College to open conference play a season ago with a 3-2 overtime win and 4-1 victory on Nov. 5-6, 2021. All-time in Colorado Springs, the Huskies are 35-24-3.
A LOOK BACK AT LAST SERIES
- Last weekend, St. Cloud State earned a split with No. 17 Western Michigan at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, falling 4-2 on Friday before a 4-1 victory on Saturday. In game one, the Broncos scored two goals late in the first period and never looked back, controlling to pace of the game throughout the contest. A shorthanded goal from senior forward Micah Miller halfway through the third period cut the deficit to 3-2, but Western Michigan would score three minutes later to push its lead back to two and the eventual final score, 4-2.
- The story of the game was much different on Saturday, as St. Cloud State outshot Western Michigan 29-12, including 13-2 in the first period, and scored two first period goals to grab momentum in the game. Senior forwards Grant Cruikshank, Aidan Spellacy and Jami Krannila (two) scored for the Huskies in a 4-2, bounce back victory.
TOUGH TO SCORE ON
- Through the first 12 games of the season, St. Cloud State has made its mark as one of the toughest defensive teams in the country, ranking among the nation's top-20 in numerous defensive categories. The leading stat in this area is the Huskies' scoring defense, which leads the NCHC and ranks fifth in the nation at 1.92 goals per game. In addition to its scoring defense, nationwide St. Cloud State ranks second in short-handed goals (four), 10th in scoring margin (1.25), 11th in save percentage (.921) and 13th in penalty kill percentage (.837).
- A big piece to the puzzle defensively for the Huskies has been the play between the pipes, as senior goalie Jaxon Castor and junior goalie Dominic Basse have played outstanding while splitting time between the net. Castor, Friday's starter for the season to-date, has produced a 4-2-0 record with a 2.18 goals-against-average and .915 save percentage. Basse, the Saturday starter, has boasted a 5-1-0 record and ranks in the nation's top-10 in GAA (fourth, 1.51) and S% (eighth, .935).
CRUIKSHANK & BASSE RETURN TO CC
- A pair of Huskies - senior forward Grant Cruikshank and junior goalie Dominic Basse - will return to where they began their collegiate careers this weekend. Cruikshank, spent three seasons (2018-21) and was a two-year captain for the Tigers where he scored 45 points (30 goals / 15 assists). Basse played two seasons for Colorado College (2020-22), producing a 10-26-3 mark in 41 games in goals for the Tigers.
GAME NOTES FROM LAST SERIES:
GAME 1
- Senior forward Grant Cruikshank continued his scoring flurry to start the season, scoring for the third consecutive game by recording his ninth goal in the Huskies' 11th game. He is the first Husky to score nine goals in the first 11 games since Ryan Lasch scored 10 in the first 11 games of the 2007-08 season.
- Senior forward Micah Miller's third period tally was a shorthanded goal, his first of the season and fifth of his career. Miller now ranks seventh all-time in program history with five shorthanded goals, matching the marks of Travis Novak (2008-12), Jason Stewart (1994-98), Dave Iannazzo (2001-05), Mike Notermann (1987-91) and Judd Peterson (2014-18).
- Junior forward Veeti Miettinen record his seventh assist of the season to extend his point streak to four games.
- Senior goalie Jaxon Castor made 26 saves in the game, the fourth time this season and eighth time in his career he has made 25 or more saves.
GAME 2
- St. Cloud State outshot Western Michigan, 29-12, in the game, its second-best mark of the season, matching its margin against Bemidji State (Oct. 29, 36-19) and trailing only its mark against St. Thomas (Oct. 2, 38-15).
- Senior forward Grant Cruikshank continued his scoring flurry to start the season, scoring for the fourth consecutive game by recording his 10th goal in the Huskies' 12th game. He is the fastest Husky to 10 goals in a season since Ryan Lasch scored 10 in the first 11 games of the 2007-08 season.
- Senior forward Aidan Spellacy netted his first goal as a Husky, scoring for the first time since March 12, 2021, when he scored a power play goal against Niagara as a member of Robert Morris.
- Spellacy's goal was his career fourth game-winning goal.
- Senior forward Jami Krannila scored fifth and sixth goal of the season with scores in the second and third period. With his two scores, he recorded his fifth career multi-goal game while matching a career-high for goals in a game.
- Redshirt freshman forward Ryan Rosborough recorded his first career point with an assist on Spellacy's score.
- Senior defenseman Brendan Bushy matched a career-high with a +3 mark on the ice, the fourth time he has hit that mark.
- Sophomore defenseman Jack Peart matched a career-high with four blocks, matching his mark against St. Thomas on Oct. 1, 2022.
SHORTHANDED GOAT
- Senior forward Micah Miller was back to his old ways this past weekend, netting his first short-handed goal of the season and the fifth of his career. The shorty moved him to seventh all-time in program history with five short-handed goals, matching the marks of Travis Novak (2008-12), Jason Stewart (1994-98), Dave Iannazzo (2001-05), Mike Notermann (1987-91) and Judd Peterson (2014-18).
- A season ago, no one in collegiate hockey was better with a man-down than senior forward Micah Miller. The Grand Rapids product led the nation with four shorty goals, while only four other players in the nation scored three shorthanded goals.
- Miller's four short-handed goals were the third-most in a single-season in Husky history, trailing only Mark Hartigan (six, 2001-02) and Brett Lievers (five, 1993-94).
- Although he had not scored in shorthanded goals in his first three seasons as a Husky, Miller won't need many more shorty's to be considered among the best in program history all-time. Already, he is only one of 11 Huskies have scored five or more shorthanded goals in their career.
CRUIKSHANK'S OFFENSIVE EMERGENCE
- St. Cloud State senior forward Grant Cruikshank has been an offensive juggernaut through the first 12 games of the season, as he leads the team in goals (10) and points (15), while ranking seventh in assists (five). Among national leaders, the fifth-year senior transfer ranks third in goals (10) and 11th in points (15). He earned NCHC Forward of the Week honors after leading SCSU to a sweep of No. 2 Minnesota State by recording five points (three goals / two assists).
- Cruikshank's hot start to the season - 10 goals in 12 games - is the best start by a Husky since Ryan Lasch scored 10 goals in the first 11 games of the 2007-08 season.
- Cruikshank played a big part in the Huskies 4-3 overtime win over Denver on Nov. 4, as he scored a third period goal to make the score 2-2, then assisted on junior forward Veeti Miettinen's game-winning goal in overtime.
- In SCSU's win over Minnesota State on Oct. 21 (3-2), Cruikshank helped lead a comeback, scoring the game-tying goal late in the second period before assisting on the game-winning goal early in the third period. In the Oct. 22 victory (4-3), Cruikshank scored the game's first goal, a shorthanded goal, assisted on the team's second goal, then scored the game-winning goal with less than four minutes remaining in the game. It was his first goal of either kind as a Husky, and fourth of either kind overall in his career.
- The fifth-year senior scored six goals in five consecutive games between Oct. 2 and Oct. 22, a scoring stretch not seen by an SCSU skater since Judd Peterson did so from Oct. 15-29, 2016. He was the first Husky to score six goals in the first six games of a season since Matt Hendricks and Nate DiCasmirro both did so to open the 2001-02 season. Since 2001-02, Cruikshank is one of 10 Huskies to record a 5-game or more goal streak, and the first since Veeti Miettinen did so in the 2020-21 season.
