Huskies fall to No. 5 Minnesota-Duluth
2/1/2022 6:05:00 PM | Women's Hockey
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Hockey dropped their tilt with No. 5 Minnesota-Duluth 5-1 on Tuesday afternoon, receiving their lone goal courtesy of freshman Dayle Ross' first collegiate strike. The Huskies were outshot 44-18 on the night. UMD scored once in the first, three times in the third and once again in the third while killing all three of SCSU's power plays to hold tight to the game's momentum. Ross scored her first collegiate goal on a brilliant effort play late in the third, poking the puck loose on the forecheck, skating ahead and putting a great move on the tender to throw it home over her right shoulder. Emma Polusny stopped 39 shots on the night in goal.
TURNING POINT
Minnesota-Duluth scored three times in the second then killed three Huskies power plays in the final frame to seal the win.

QUOTABLES
St. Cloud State Women's Hockey Head Coach Steve Macdonald
"I thought we started well for the first half of the first period, but then it changed. A couple shifts right before their goal, air went out of our intensity and engagement a little bit. The game changed at that moment, and we weren't able to get back into it. The bottom line was we just weren't good enough tonight to get back even early when they got a couple, and then it's just too late. They're a good team and it was just too hard for us to dig out of that hole."
On the special teams' structure… "I liked our PK. We have players who are really buying into that role and becoming very good at it. I'm happy with how that's going, especially the last two weeks. You need that going down this stretch. On the power play, I thought our entries needed to be better. Our breakouts, our entries into the zone, those are areas that we're going to have to address. We have players in spots that we like, but if we can't get into the zone we can't score. We need to work on our entries and be much better in those situations."
On Dayle Ross' play in her freshman season… "She's a player that just wants to get better each and every day. She's open to learning, willing to learn and willing to put in the work. She cares so much for this team, the program and the players on that bench with her. To see her get rewarded with a goal, we're really happy to see that. She's really matured in her game over the last two weeks. With Wisconsin she really matured – you could see her defending getting better, her reads, her gaps, her poise, and her patience in defending. It's something a lot of young defensemen have to learn. She's learning that, and you're really seeing her grow into that role. I'm really happy with where her development is, and she's going to be a big part of this program."
On the quick week ahead… "Recovery, obviously is huge. Looking after our bodies but also looking after the mind, managing that portion of it over the next couple days leading into that stretch. We're going to play a really tough St. Thomas team on Saturday-Sunday, then we have Ohio State on Tuesday. They're going to be really hard-fought games this weekend, so we need to make sure that we're mentally and physically prepared. I believe we will be physically prepared – I'm happy with where we are there – we just need to make sure we're mentally prepared to go."
