St. Cloud State Men's Basketball Gears Up to Host Two NSIC South Opponents

Huskies to host Winona State & Upper Iowa
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The St. Cloud State men's basketball team is back in action at Halenbeck Hall this weekend to face off against two NSIC South Division opponents. The Huskies will host the Winona State Warriors and Upper Iowa Peacocks in Halenbeck Hall Jan. 13 and Jan. 14.

Friday's game is set for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off while Saturday's game is set for 5:30 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall. The NSIC Network will provide the game streams while Steve Linzmeier, the Voice of Huskies Basketball, will provide live audio coverage on the Varsity Network App. Live stats will be available on the SCSU men's basketball schedule page.

Saturday's game will be Alumni Day for the Huskies as well as Husky Hot Shots night. St. Cloud will honor alumni during halftime.

A Look Back
St. Cloud split their match-ups last weekend with RV Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul. The Huskies traveled down to the Taylor Center in Mankato, MN last weekend where they took on the Mavericks. Minnesota State went on a 16-0 scoring run halfway through the first half to go up 20-5 over the Huskies. St. Cloud struggled on offense only shooting .233 from the field and ended the half down 38-23. The Huskies opened up the second half on a 20-9 scoring run going 5-6 from behind the arc. St. Cloud tied the game at 57 each until Minnesota State outscored the Huskies 20-7 to close out the game. SCSU was unable to respond and fell 78-65.

The next day, St. Cloud took on Concordia-St. Paul where the Huskies opened up the game hot, holding the lead through the first six minutes of play until the Bears tied it up at ten each. SCSU then took the game back and closed out the half up 38-27. Back on the court for the second half, St. Cloud went on a 14-7 scoring run to go up by 18 points over CSP. The Huskies then struggled to keep the lead as the Bears closed the gap. CSP took a 77-74 lead with just nine seconds left of the game. Matthew Willert hit critical free throws for the Huskies to tie the game up at 77 where it then went into overtime. Despite losing another play to fouls, the Huskies outscored CSP 10-1 in overtime to hold off the Bears for an 87-78 victory.

St. Cloud State Huskies
St. Cloud will enter the weekend with a 6-9 overall, 3-7 record in NSIC play. SCSU sits at 7th in the north division and 14th overall in the conference. Matthew Willert leads the Huskies with 15.8 points per game and 4.1 rebounds. Ryan Bagley has 75 assists on the season which places him in 3rd place in the NSIC averaging 5.0 per game.

Winona State Warriors
Winona State holds a 9-6 overall, 4-6 conference record, sits at 6th in the south division, and 10th overall in the conference standings. The Warriors are coming off a weekend split with a win over Minnesota Crookston and a loss to Bemidji State. WSU is led by Connor Dillion who is averaging 18.6 points per game and 4.5 rebounds. Dillion sits 7th in the conference for scoring. Luke Martens leads the team in rebound averaging 7.0 per game which places him in 9th place in the NSIC for rebounding. Owen King has the best assists/turnover ratio in the Northern Sun with a 4.5. Another thing to note is that Winona State has the third best scoring defense in the conference surrendering 67.6 points to opponents. Additionally, the Warriors hold a 2.40 turnover margin, which is second best in the NSIC.

Upper Iowa Peacocks
Upper Iowa enters the weekend 9-7 overall, 6-4 in conference play, 5th in the south division, and 8th overall in the conference standings. The Peacocks are coming off a weekend sweep of Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston which snapped a three-game losing streak for UIU. Jake Hilmer leads the Peacocks in scoring averaging 21.3 points per game which places him in 2nd for scoring in the Northern Sun and 2nd for assists averaging 5.6 per game. In addition, Hilmer earned NSIC South Division Player of the Week honors this week for averaging 24.5 points, 5.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.0 steals in UIU's weekend sweep. Nick Reid is averaging 9.1 rebounds for UIU each game, leading the conference.
