St. Cloud State allows three unanswered in WCHA second half opener
MANKATO, Minn. – No. 14 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey allowed three unanswered goals to Minnesota State after leading 1-0 at the first intermission, falling 3-1 in their series opener at the Mayo Clinic HSEC in Mankato.
Svenja Voigt scored the game's first goal just a minute and a half into the opening period, slipping through traffic to the slot then going bar down with a lightning-quick wrister off an assist by Addi Scribner. The Huskies held a 9-5 edge on shots through one, holding the momentum entering the break.
Minnesota State knotted the game at one midway through the second period then took the lead nine minutes into the third. An empty net Mavericks goal with just under two minutes to play sealed the 3-1 final.
Shots were even at 25 apiece on a night that saw faceoffs and special teams play key roles in the outcome. St. Cloud State went just 20-32 on draws while going scoreless on their two power plays. The Huskies took just one trip to the box on a coincidental penalty, marking the first time this season the penalty kill did not take the ice.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Brian Idalski
"Definitely a playoff-type atmosphere. Our first time playing each other, and it was a close battle like we expected – a game that could have gone either way."
"We've been talking about it the majority of the year – when you get to playoff and end-of-the-season games, everything is important. Every icing, every faceoff, every blocked shot, every puck getting deep or getting out – those are all important. Some of those details are the difference between winning and losing at this time of year. We have to go through the process, we can't cheat it. We have to learn how to win in crunch time."
"I thought – again, us not managing pucks at times, we got hemmed in a few times – but with that being said we still had some pretty good opportunities at the other end. There were times where our forecheck was good, we were turning pucks over and creating opportunities. Where we're at right now, we need to learn how to do it on a more consistent basis in a big hockey game."
"The second period was tough for us. That's something we haven't seen since the beginning of the year. In the third period, a one-goal game, and then they get a bounce. Sometimes it comes down to just as much as that. They made a play, got one to trickle in, we didn't, and that's the difference in the game."
"We can't feel bad. This is the process, we have to learn from it. We had every opportunity to win that hockey game, we just have to be a little better with our details and a little better managing some pucks, some shorter shifts. It's as simple as it sounds, really. That's the difference for me."
