Gentry and Ross score as Huskies drop series opener
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – (RV) St. Cloud State Women's Hockey fell 6-2 in their series opener against No. 1 Ohio State on Friday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Huskies were outshot 37-16 on the day and blocked 21 shots, struggling to contain the powerful Buckeye offense.
Falling behind 3-0 midway through the second period, Emma Gentry collected a loose puck in neutral and skated ahead before ripping a shot from the left point. The puck rebounded hard off the goaltender's pad to the goal line near the left circle – not missing a beat, Gentry slashed to the spot and fired her second chance in from a sharp angle to make it 3-1.
Ohio State would add another right at the end of a power play six minutes later for a 4-1 lead. Dayle Ross put her hustle on display with three minutes to go in the frame, racing nearly 160 feet to scoop up a puck poked free and dumped down by Taytum Geier all the way at the other end of the ice. Collecting the puck on the right side of the end boards, Ross centered a shot to the creese for a crashing Allie Cornelius. The latter punched the puck free from the broken-down tender before Ross skated back in and pushed it through for her first goal of the season.
The Buckeyes would tack on two more the third period.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Brian Idalski
"The message before the game was to focus on competing, to break the game down into five minute segments and go from there, shift-to-shift. No matter what happens, good or bad, let's just try to win the next shift. You can't eat an elephant in one bite, and we knew it would be a tall order against the No. 1 team in the country. They're the No. 1 team in the country for a reason – you can refer to it as tough, I thought it was a pretty good learning experience. For big stretches there we played really well, and I was happy with our compete level, but if you make a mistake they're a team that puts it in the back of the net. They are a team that has more depth, they're high on skill, they work very hard and are a well-coached team. I don't think anyone expected one year in for us to do some of the things that we're doing – I was happy with our compete level today."
"They're one of the best faceoff teams in our league, maybe in the country. If you can't do well on draws, you'll be chasing the puck all game – we didn't want to do that. I know Hymlárová had a great afternoon in the faceoff circle, it was good that we were doing well and starting some possessions in a game like this."
"I thought JoJo did well. We ask our goalies to stop the ones they're supposed to, and if they stop a few that they're not that's awesome. I thought some of the breakdowns in front of her need to be cleaned up. That's where my focus was more centered. JoJo has played well all year. We'll stay with the routine, Sanni will go tomorrow and I expect her typical level of effort and execution."
