Huskies fall behind early, 3-0, can’t complete comeback
DULUTH, Minn. – For the second straight night, No. 1 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (18-8-0, 10-6-0 NCHC) dug itself a hole it could not get out of, falling 6-3 to Minnesota Duluth (12-13-1, 7-9-0 NCHC) on Saturday night at Amsoil Arena. The Huskies yielded three goals in the first period and couldn't rally to comeback, pulling within one score twice before falling by three goals.
TURNING POINT
The hole for SCSU was dug early, as the Bulldogs scored two power play goals and a shorthanded goal in the first 20 minutes to jump out to a 3-0 lead at the first intermission. UMD's Luke Loheit scored with the man advantage at the 8:49 mark, while Ben Steeves scored his fourth goal of the weekend at the 15:46 mark. The Huskies had a glimpse of momentum swing its way when the Bulldogs were called for a charging penalty late in the period. The referees reviewed the play for a major, but the call of the ice stood, and the Huskies went on a power play.
UMD was able to take advantage of an SCSU mishap, as Jesse Jacques converted a shorthanded breakaway at the 16:22 mark to make the score 3-0.

Up next, the Huskies will return home for its penultimate home series of the regular season when Miami visits the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Feb. 3-4. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT on Friday and 6:00 p.m. CT on Saturday on Fox 9 + and KNSI.

TOP HUSKIES
- Senior forward Jami Krannila (Nokia, Finland) scored two goals to lead the way on offense for the Huskies.
- Freshman forward Ethan AuCoin (Calgary, Alberta) scored his first career goal in the third period.
- Sophomore defenseman Jack Peart (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and sophomore defenseman Josh Luedtke (Minnetonka, Minn.) each had two assists.
- Following the loss, St. Cloud State fell to 78-60-11 against Minnesota Duluth and 30-33-3 against the Bulldogs in Duluth.
- The Huskies scored twice on the power play, its fourth consecutive game scoring with the man advantage. On the season, SCSU's conversion rate improved to 26.0 percent (26-of-100).
- Krannila scored two goals in the game to match his career-best mark for goals in a season at 15, equaling his mark from last season (2021-22). It marks the fifth time this season and the ninth time in his career he has scored two goals in a game.
- The Husky senior now sits at 98 career points (46-52-98) and is two points away from becoming the 37th member of SCSU's 100-point club.
- AuCoin scored his first career goal in the third period, scoring an even strength goal at the 6:15 mark in the third period.
- Peart had a pair of assists in the game, his third time reaching two assists in a game this season. With three helpers on the weekend, Peart has set a new career high for assists (18) and points (20).
- Luedtke matched a career high in assists with two, the second time this season and third time in his career he has reached that mark. He also matched his career high mark for assists in a season with six.
- Junior goalie Dominic Basse (Alexandria, Va.) made 21 saves in the game, the eighth time this season and 37th time in his career he has made at least 20 saves in a game.
