Gophers and Huskies trade third period goals before late OT winner from Cooley
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Despite both teams entering the weekend with top-10 offenses, defense was the name of the game for the second time in as many days, as No. 3/1 Minnesota scored an overtime goal to sneak past No. 4 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey, 2-1. The Gophers scored with 18 seconds left in the overtime period, keeping the Huskies from earning a tie on the road.
TURNING POINT
After a scoreless first and second period, both teams traded goals in the first 10 minutes of the third period. The Gophers struck first, as Matthew Knies scored on the power play 2:55 into the period. The Huskies responded soon after, however, as senior forward Chase Brand (Park Rapids, Minn.) scored at the 7:56 mark of the period. The play happened as the Huskies just finished killing off a penalty, with senior defenseman Dylan Anhorn (Calgary, Alberta) finding a streaking graduate defenseman Brendan Bushy (Thief River Falls, Minn.) as he jumped out of the penalty box. Bushy then led a 3-on-1 rush for the Huskies, sending a cross ice pass to Brand, who fired a pass towards sophomore forward Mason Salquist (Grand Forks, N.D.), but the pass was tipped by Minnesota and into the back of the net.
The score remained 1-1 as time ran out, sending the game to overtime. Both teams had plenty of chances in the extra period, but Minnesota was the one to capitalize, scoring with 18 seconds to earning the OT win.
