Bowlby scores two goals; SCSU nets three in the final period to earn series-opening win
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 14/15 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (4-1-0, 1-0-0 WCHA) used three third period goals to down Bemidji State (0-4-1, 0-1-0 WCHA) 5-2 in Friday's conference opener at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Huskies earned three conference points with the win while outshooting Bemidji 30 to 12.
Graduate forward CC Bowlby scored twice on the evening while freshman forward Alice Sauriol and graduate forward Katie Kaufman each provided two assists. Fifth-year forward Klára Hymlárová and redshirt freshman forward Laura Zimmermann added multi-point efforts with a goal and an assist each. Hymlárová won a dominant 66.7% of her draws, going 14-7 in the circle as the Huskies held a three-faceoff edge on draws.
Zimmermann opened the scoring five minutes into the first period as the Huskies' power play unit earned their first opportunity on the advantage. Taking a pass from freshman forward Sofianna Sundelin as the Huskies crossed through neutral ice, Zimmermann walked into the slot and ripped a powerful wrister past the BSU tender to make it 1-0. Bemidji State scored with just under five to go in the frame, sending the game to the first intermission locked at one a piece.
The SCSU forecheck showed off their creativity early in the second period as Sauriol poked the puck loose at the half wall above the right circle, deflecting to the stick of Kaufman as she darted down the wall. Kaufman turned sharp at the bottom of the circle and knifed to the dot, sending a perfect pass to Bowlby for a one-time blast. St. Cloud State's 2-1 lead would last just 20 seconds as BSU tied things back up at 2-2 a moment later.
SCSU opened the final 20 minutes with a flurry of chances, striking first in the frame a minute in as Sauriol dished an incredible back pass from below the goal line in the left corner to Bowlby in the slot for a one-timer. Sauriol fed the puck back through three defenders, finding Bowlby through traffic to make it 3-2. Hymlárová pushed the lead to two with a goal just under three minutes later, wrapping around blocker side to beat the goaltender. Less than a minute later sophomore forward Avery Farrell went bar down on a perfect pass from Zimmermann to finish an odd-man rush for the decisive 5-2 lead.
QUOTABLES – St. Cloud State head coach Brian Idalski
"Overall, a pretty good game – the third period was definitely solid, but you can see there's some room for us to grow. It's very interesting – last year I thought we came in, had an identity and quickly played to it, but I also can tell you we quickly reached our ceiling of what we were capable of. This group, we're still finding that identity of who we are and what we are, but we definitely can get up and down the ice a lot better. We have a lot more depth, it's just trusting each other, trusting the structure and everyone being on the same page. It was nice to see us put some of that together in the third period."
