St. Cloud State Men’s Soccer Set to Host GLIAC Tournament Game

SCSU plays Saginaw Valley State in a quarterfinal match Saturday afternoon
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Soccer (3-6-5 overall, 3-3-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) opens postseason play this Saturday with a home match against Saginaw Valley State. The GLIAC quarterfinal match will kick off from Husky Stadium at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies finished fourth in the GLIAC standings, earning the right to host a first-round tournament game for the first time in program history. Saginaw Valley State (4-7-4 overall, 2-5-3 GLIAC) finished fifth in the standings and will play on the road just a year after it won the regular season and tournament titles.

LAST TIME OUT
For the third game in a row, St. Cloud State Men's Soccer earned a tie after scoring a set piece goal in the final six minutes of the match. The Huskies earned a 2-2 draw against Northern Michigan (2-9-4 overall, 1-6-3 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon in Marquette, Mich. After a scoreless first half, SCSU broke through in the 54th minute, taking a 1-0 lead. Sophomore defender Owen Worsdell (Brighton, England) dribbled down the left side of the field and sent a cross into the penalty box. Fifth-year midfielder Zinedine Kroeten (St. Louis Park, Minn.) made a quick pass to sophomore midfielder Yuken Harmon (Coon Rapids, Minn.) who was making a run to front of the net. Harmon hit the ball first-time with his left foot over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Northern Michigan would respond, tying the game at one apiece in the 68th minute and go on to take a 2-1 lead in the 85th minute. In the 87th minute, junior defender Noah Eklund (Andover, Minn.) was fouled near midfield. Kroeten sent a long, left-footed ball into the penalty area where senior midfielder Noah Kantorowicz (Minneapolis) was able to flick a header into the goal, bringing the game back level, 2-2.
SERIES HISTORY
Saturday will be the seventh time the Huskies match up against Saginaw Valley State. SCSU drew both matchups against the Cardinals this season. On Sept. 15, the teams played to a 0-0 draw in St. Cloud in the Huskies first GLIAC match of the season. A month later, on Oct. 15, the teams tied 1-1, in University Center, Mich. The Huskies hold an 0-4-2 all-time record against SVSU.
SCOUTING SAGINAW VALLEY STATE
Saginaw Valley State is currently on a two-game skid. They are 4-7-4 overall and 2-5-3 in GLIAC play. They last picked up a win on Oct. 13 at home against Northern Michigan. The Cardinals are 1-3-1 in their last five games.
The Cardinals' offensive attack is led by junior forward Jonathan Monney who has scored five goals. He earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors in week four and is tied for fourth in the GLIAC for goals scored. Senior forward Jayden Cameron and junior forward Mzo Mthembu are tied for second on the team in points (5 – 2 goals/1 assist each). Junior defender Benjamin Adamson earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors in week three after anchoring an SVSU backline that earned two clean sheets and only allowed four shots on goal. SVSU has used three goalkeepers this year. Sophomore Nick Kay started the first two games of the season and sophomore Connor Beach started three matches in the middle of the season. Junior Jack Simms has seen the most action between the posts for the Cardinals, making 10 starts. He has played 900 minutes, posting an overall record of 3-3-4 overall. He has earned three clean sheets, making 36 saves. He owns a goals against average of 1.40.
GLIAC TOURNAMENT BRACKET
No. 3 seed Davenport will host No. 6 Northern Michigan at 6 p.m. CT in the other quarterfinals game.
The semifinals will be played on either Saturday, Nov. 4 or Sunday, Nov. 5. No. 1 seed UW-Parkside will host the winner of St. Cloud State and Saginaw Valley State while No. 2 seed Purdue Northwest will host the winner of Davenport and Northern Michigan.
The final will be played on either Saturday, Nov. 11 or Sunday, Nov. 12 and will be hosted by the higher seeded team.
