Huskies get back in win column, hold off Michigan Tech at home, 64-61
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (3-1, 0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) got back in the win column on Tuesday night at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, taking down Michigan Tech (1-3, 0-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), 64-61. SCSU's 3-1 start is its best four-game start to a season since the 2018-2019 campaign, a season where the Huskies would go on to win 22 games and reach the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Both teams struggled to get their offense going in the first 20 minutes of the game as they both shot under 35% from the field. The Huskies were able to connect on five of their 11 first half three-pointers (45.5%) while Michigan Tech only made one of their 11 attempts (9.1%). The Huskies took advantage of the poor shooting percentages on the boards, grabbing nine offensive and 30 total rebounds in the first half compared to the two offensive and 18 total for MTU. Freshman Anish Ramlall (Rosemount, Minn.) was one of the lone bright spots for the Huskies in the first half and he helped the team carry a nine-point lead into the halftime break. In the first half he scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 from behind the three-point line.
The second half went back and forth with both teams making large scoring runs. The SCSU lead got as big as 12, early in the second half but MTU would answer every run made by St. Cloud State with a run of their own. With 4:58 left in the game, MTU made a bucket to tie the game at 54. The Huskies would regain and hold the lead again until there were 0:36 left, when sophomore guard Marcus Tomashek made a driving layup to give MTU its first lead of the second half. 12 seconds later, freshman Jamiir Allen (Milwaukee, Wis.) drove into the lane past his defender and shot a left-handed floater that bounced on the rim multiple times before dropping in, giving the Huskies a 62-61 lead. On the next Michigan Tech possession, Ramlall stole the ball and was fouled. He made both of his bonus free throw shots, extending the Huskies lead to three with under four seconds remaining. MTU wouldn't get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.
Tomashek deserves a lot of credit for the second half Michigan Tech comeback as he poured in 17 second-half points (6-of-11 from the field and 2-of-4 from three). Ramlall had a solid second half as well, contributing nine points (3-of-5 from the field and 1-of-2 from three), two steals and two rebounds in the final 20 minutes. Graduate student Luke Taylor (Germantown, Wis.) and senior Joe Mutimer (Melbourne, Australia) each scored five second-half points. Freshman Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia) grabbed seven second half rebounds.
