St. Cloud State earns one point in series opener with shootout loss
DULUTH, Minn. – Junior goaltender JoJo Chobak stopped 43 shots while Emma Gentry provided the lone Huskies goal as No. 12 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey took a point from No. 7 Minnesota Duluth with a 1-1 tie on Friday evening at Amsoil Arena.
Chobak was simply phenomenal in goal for SCSU, making 43 saves on 44 shots including 18-of-18 in the first period alone. The junior extended her streak of starts without an even-strength goal allowed to three, as the lone Bulldog marker came on a power play. Over her last three starts, Chobak is 2-0-1 with a .991 save percentage and a 0.32 goals against average.
The Huskies rallied around Chobak after her incredible opening frame, peppering Minnesota Duluth netminder Emma Soderberg with 17 shots total between the second and third period after putting just one on in the first. UMD scored the game's first goal with just under four minutes to play in the second, sending both clubs to the second intermission with a one-goal game.
Fighting shift for shift with the Bulldogs in the third, St. Cloud State's forecheck created a fantastic scoring chance with under four minutes left in regulation. Addi Scribner poked the puck loose behind the net, skating back towards the left circle and sending a centering feed to the high slot. Emma Gentry glided in from neutral and ripped a wrister past Soderberg, drawing the game even at one.
A scoreless overtime period gave way to a shootout where the Bulldogs scored the lone successful attempt, earning the second WCHA point.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Brian Idalski
On JoJo Chobak's strong evening in goal… "I was happy for her. Obviously with the history of her playing here, being able to come out, have a good outing and give us an opportunity to win a hockey game – she's been doing it all year and continues to do it. That was awesome."
On Emma Gentry's terrific night… "This is not new. She has been terrific for us all year long, continues to grow – her physicality, her compete, her shot – you're just excited for the overall growth of her game. You're taking steps every weekend. She definitely performed very well for us."
On the critical 5-on-3 Huskies power play in the second… "UMD has had their good penalty kill – we talked about it before the game that the special teams battle was going to be important. I felt like that was a pretty crucial juncture. If we were able to get one there and play with the lead, that changes the whole complexion of the game. We did have a good look, we had the good pass through the box backdoor that just went wide. We had some decent puck movements, we just didn't finish it off."
On the ramifications of Saturday's series finale… "A couple different things. Obviously there's the seeding with playoff matchups potentially with tomorrow's game, but also there's a bigger picture – we need a win against a top 10 opponent to push us. We want to be in the top 10. It's within our grasp. We control our destiny. It's a big game in the national picture as well, not just in the WCHA. We have to get a good rest, take care of our bodies on a short turnaround and get ready to battle and compete just as hard."
On the looming possibility of an NCAA Tournament berth… "It's been a conversation. It's not our focus – it is discussed. We're aware of it. The way we're built, the club we have, you just have to have a shift-to-shift mentality and understand if our details are well, our execution is well and we're competing hard we can give ourselves a chance to accomplish some of these things. That's just really where we're at."
