Brena records NCAA provisional mark in the High Jump to highlight Huskies effort
LAWRENCE, Kan. – St. Cloud State Track & Field produced an excellent weekend at the Kansas Relays in Lawrence this weekend, earning one athlete an NCAA provisional mark while adding six top-10 finishes. Graduate student jumper Paola Brena cleared 1.73m in the High Jump on Friday, a mark that places her No. 2 in NCAA DII and clears the provisional mark by nearly two progressions.
SCSU opened their efforts on Thursday as Dacoda Zimmerman launched a 33.98m toss in the Hammer Throw and Mariana Guerra-Reese ran a 2:31.38 in the 800 Meter preliminaries. Cheresa Bouley (11:53.88) and Clara Welhouse (12:15.15) took eighth and 11th respectively in the Steeplechase.
On Friday, Shelby Romig ran 15.04s in the 100 Meter Hurdle prelims for a top-25 finish. Dacoda Zimmerman placed 11th in the Shot Put with a 12.18m heave, then Brooklyn Brouse (1:07.85) and Makaylin Christenson (1:12.80) both earned top 25 finishes in the 400 Meter Hurdle preliminaries – with the former placing 12th. Parker Buske soared 12.19m in the Triple Jump for fourth, setting the tone for an excellent day for Huskies jumpers. Paola Brena placed fourth in the High Jump with a 1.73m clear, recording an NCAA provisional mark and moving up to No. 2 in NCAA DII. Julia Rowles added an Outdoor-best 1.63m clear to take seventh.
Two Huskies competed on the final day of the relays, opened with Mariana Guerra-Reese running a 1:02.90 in the 400 Meter. Parker Buske earned a second-place podium in the Long Jump with a 5.45m leap followed by Julia Rowles (5.28m) in eighth and Shelby Romig (4.97m) in 14th.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Sam Kettenhofen
"It was a great experience for everyone. The meet provided excellent competition, challenging conditions and new competitors. I am very pleased with how we competed and represented St. Cloud State."
"Paola had a great weekend. She was focused and dialed in from the start of the trip and it shows in how she performed – I'm very proud of her! Parker also had an excellent weekend. She jumped a wind-aided season best in the triple jump and had a tremendous series. Long jump was also a really good showing, especially with the conditions. It was cold but her approach and takeoff were really good."
"Paola's early season success means we can train and jump a little more free the rest of the outdoor season. She can definitely go higher and knowing she's hit a high bar already removes a lot of pressure and allows her to focus on what matters."
"The next week offers multiple competitions – one at the U of M and one at Concordia. Both are shorter travel trips but offer excellent opportunities to compete and improve. I am very excited to compete and continue to work towards some larger goals – and as always am crossing my fingers for favorable weather!"
