- St. Cloud State will continue its pursuit of home ice in the NCHC Quarterfinals and its fourth Spencer Penrose Cup, as the Huskies currently sit in a tie for first place in the NCHC standings with 26 points (7-2-3). St. Cloud State enters the weekend ranked No. 15 in the USCHO Top-20 Poll and No. 14 in the USA Today / The Rink Live poll while Omaha is receiving votes in both polls.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Huskies and Mavericks will take the ice for the 47th and 48th times this weekend, with the Huskies holding a 29-16-3 advantage in the all-time series between the two programs. SCSU will be looking to turn its luck around against Omaha, as the Mavericks are 5-4-1 against the Huskies in the last 10 meetings.
- Earlier this season, the Huskies beat Omaha, 4-1, before the Mavericks bounced back with a shootout win in a 2-2 tie in a Dec. 8-9 series at Baxter Arena. Redshirt sophomore forward Ryan Rosborough scored his first collegiate goal in Friday's win, while fifth-year defenseman Dylan Anhorn and freshman forward Verner Miettinen added tallies and senior goaltender Dominic Basse made 27 saves. On Saturday, freshman goaltender Isak Posch made his first career start and made 31 saves in the tie.
A LOOK BACK AT THE LAST SERIES
- St. Cloud State met No. 6/7 North Dakota at the Brooks Center and managed to take two our of six points in the conference standings to pull even with the Fighting Hawks in the NCHC standings. On Friday, the Huskies fell behind 2-0 after the first period, but managed to outshoot the Fighting Hawks 32-12 over the final two periods and pull within one goal at 4-3 with under four minutes remaining, but an empty net goal with 1:32 left sealed the victory for UND, 5-3. On Saturday, the Huskies once again dominated the pace of play, outshooting UND 35-27 and 34-21 in regulation, but the two teams skated to an even 3-3 after 65 minutes. In the shootout, SCSU was able to earn a 2-1 win following scores from senior forward Veeti Miettinen and sophomore forward Adam Ingram, as well as two stops from senior goaltender Dominic Basse.
MIETTINEN JOINS 100-POINT CLUB
- Senior forward Veeti Miettinen became the 39th member of St. Cloud State's 100-point club in Friday's (Jan. 19) contest against North Dakota, netting his sixth power play goal of the season in the third period. He is the second Husky to join the 100-point club this season after fifth-year forward Zach Okabe joined the exclusive club on Nov. 18. The Husky senior has led the offensive charge for the Huskies all season with his team-leading 13 goals, a new career-best in a single season for Miettinen. His 11 career game-winning goals rank seventh all-time in program history, as he sits a four-way tie with Tim Hanus (1988-92), Garrett Roe (2007-11) and Joey Benik (2012-16).
- The Husky forward scored in six consecutive games between Oct. 20 and Nov. 11, the longest scoring streak by a Husky since Ryan Lasch produced the same mark in the 2007-08 season (Oct. 27 - Nov. 23, 2007).
- Miettinen scored his 10th goal against Michigan on Nov. 25 to become just the ninth Husky to record four consecutive seasons with 10 or more goals. - Miettinen has powered the Huskies power play unit through the first half of the season, scoring six of the team's 16 goals on the man advantage. The Husky senior's six power play goals ranks fourth in the NCHC and 12th nationally, while the SCSU's team mark of 19.0 percent (16-of-84) ranks fifth in the NCHC and 36th in the NCAA.Â
