Huskies hold three two-goal leads but drop 7-6 result in overtime
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 15/14 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (11-8-4, 7-3-3 NCHC) matched a season-high for goals but dropped a 13-goal thriller, 7-6, in overtime to (RV) Omaha (12-9-2, 5-7-1 NCHC) on Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. The Huskies held three two-goal leads in the game but allowed four scores in the second period, and two in the third period before an overtime power play goal from Omaha's Tanner Ludtke to seal the victory.
Fifth-year defenseman Dylan Anhorn (Calgary, Alberta) and freshman forward Verner Miettinen (Espoo, Finland) each scored three points for the Huskies, while sophomore forward Adam Ingram (West St. Paul, Manitoba) scored two goals in the game.
Ingram started the game off for the Huskies on the right foot, netting the game's first two goals to jump out to a 2-0 lead. SCSU dominated the game's opening period by outshooting Omaha 18-4 and entered the locker room up 1-0 after Ingram scored at the 16:19 mark of the period. Ingram received a breakout pass in the neutral zone from freshman forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) to spring him loose on a breakaway, where he beat the Maverick netminder with a wrist shot.
Ingram scored the first goal of the second period, a power play goal at the 5:34 mark to start a wild period which saw four goals from each team. Fifth-year forward Zach Okabe (Okotoks, Alberta) and freshman forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) each netted their fifth goals of the season after Omaha responses to take a 4-2 lead, but then Omaha scored two goals in a span of 14 seconds to knot the game up at 4-4 with 2:38 left in the period. Junior forward Mason Salquist (Grand Forks, N.D.) would then have a response of his own a little after, as he netted a goal with just over a minute remaining in the period to see-saw the lead back to SCSU, 5-4.
In the third period, the Mavericks came out of the locker room on fire, scoring at the 1:12 and 1:42 marks of the period to grab its first lead of the game at 5-4. With the Huskies now seeking a bounce back of their own, Anhorn would be the one to answer. The Husky captain fired a shot from just inside the blue line that got all the way through traffic and passed Omaha's goaltender for a score at the 10:16 mark to pull even at 6-6.
Neither team would find the back of the net in the final 10 minutes of regulation, sending the game to overtime. Following an interference call on SCSU early in the overtime session, Omaha scored a power play goal 39 seconds into the extra period for a 7-6 win and two points in the conference standings.
