St. Cloud State Men’s Basketball Returns to Conference Play with Weekend Road Trip

Huskies hit the road to play USF Friday, SMSU Saturday
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (6-6 overall, 2-4 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) resumes Northern Sun play this weekend after a playing a pair of nonconference games throughout holiday break. The Huskies travel to play Sioux Falls (6-7, 3-4 NSIC) on Friday and Southwest Minnesota State (7-6, 4-3 NSIC) on Saturday. Tip off for Friday's game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT at the Stewart Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. and Saturday's game is slated for a 3:30 p.m. CT start at the R/A Facility in Marshall, Minn.

LAST TIME OUT
St. Cloud State opened 2024 playing host to Minnesota Morris on Tuesday. Through the first eight minutes of the game, St. Cloud State held a lead as big as six points. The Huskies started to find their groove offensively as freshman Jamiir Allen (Milwaukee, Wis.) drove into the lane and finished a left-handed floater. After the Huskies defense forced the UMN Morris to miss a fall-away jump shot, Allen picked up the rebound and went coast to coast to finish in traffic while getting fouled. The ensuing offensive possession, graduate student Luke Taylor (Germantown, Wis.) found freshman Vance Peiffer (Waukee, Iowa) in the paint who finished through contact for back-to-back and-ones for the Huskies. Senior Matt Willert (Buffalo, Minn.) capped off a 13-0 St. Cloud run after he drilled a three-pointer on the wing. The Huskies defense held Minnesota Morris scoreless for four minutes and 20 seconds and forced two turnovers. St. Cloud State held 28-11 lead with 8:34 left in the first half. The Cougars cut the lead down to 13 with 6:29 remaining in the half, but the Huskies closed the half on a 22-4 run as freshman Anish Ramlall (Rosemount, Minn.) ended the half with a bang as he netted a corner three with four seconds remaining to give the Huskies a 56-25 lead going into the break.
The first half saw SCSU shoot the lights out – it shot 58% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc with nine made three pointers. The Huskies defense stifled the Cougars offense, holding them to 32% from the field and 33% from three-point range. St. Cloud State used its defensive length to force 12 turnovers which led to 13 points.
Minnesota Morris scored the first four points of the second half to cut the Huskies lead down to 27, but a three by Ramlall pushed the lead back up to 30. St. Cloud State led by 28 or more points for the remainder of the game, cruising to a 99-52 victory. The three-point bombardment by the Huskies proved to be too much for the Cougars as SCSU knocked down a season-high 16 threes at a 42% clip. UMN Morris only made five of their 15 three-point attempts.
Ramlall led the Huskies in scoring with 14 points and tied his career-high with four three-point makes. Ramlall continued his prowess as a playmaker by dishing out three assists which he has done in four consecutive games.
Allen continued his hot streak for the Huskies, putting together a 13-point, five assist, three steal outing. The assists and steals were both career-best marks for Allen. The freshman has been a thief defensively – he has recorded a steal in four consecutive games (including 2+ in the last three) and currently sits in 9th place in the NSIC with 1.3 steals per game.
Freshman Wyatt Hawks (White Bear Lake, Minn.) recorded his first career double-double, tallying 10 points and 10 rebounds. Hawks has been on a tear for the Huskies, registering 10 or more points in three consecutive games and continued his streak of shooting 57% or better from the floor to four consecutive games. Hawks also blocked three shots against UMN Morris, a career-high, and has blocked a shot in three-consecutive games.
Graduate student Craig Steele (Portage, Wis.) put up a season-high 12 points in 15 minutes off the bench while draining a season-high four of his seven three-point attempts. Steele has scored 6+ points in three consecutive games and has knocked down 2+ threes in three consecutive games. The graduate student has been a sniper beyond the arc for the Huskies as he leads the team in three-point percentage at 45%.

SERIES HISTORY
In the teams 19 all-time matchups, St. Cloud State holds a record of 14-5 over Sioux Falls but have dropped its last two games against the Cougars. In the first matchup last year, the Huskies fell 83-73 at the Stewart Center in Sioux Falls.
The first half was tightly contested, and the Cougars held a 36-35 lead at halftime. St. Cloud State briefly took a 37-36 lead in the second half, but USF went on a 20-4 run to take commanding 15-point lead over the next six minutes. The Cougars controlled the rest of the game, outscoring St. Cloud 47-38 in the 2nd half on their way to an 83-73 victory. The Cougars shot a blistering 48% from downtown as they drained 19 of their 39 three-point attempts.
Matt Willert scored a team-high 17 points, grabbed five rebounds, and drained two of his three three-point attempts. Then-freshman Andre Renta (Hudson, Wis.) scored 10 points, snatched five rebounds, and dished out three assists.
The second matchup was in the first round of the NSIC Tournament in Sioux Falls. Then-redshirt freshman Tony Dahl (Buffalo, Minn.) broke what was a 7-7 tie by draining a three-pointer off an assist from Renta. Dahl cashed in another three-pointer on the ensuing offensive possession to give the Huskies a three-point lead. A pair of free throws by Sioux Falls cut the Huskies lead down to one, but Dahl tickled the twine again for his third consecutive three, giving SCSU a 16-12 lead. Then-junior Joe Mutimer (Melbourne, Australia) capped off a 7-0 Huskies run by finishing a fast break layup. A jumper by Renta gave St. Cloud State a 25-16 lead but marked the beginning of the end for the Huskies. A 14-0 run by Sioux Falls gave them a five-point lead and went into halftime with a 40-33 lead after closing the half on a 24-8 run.
The second half garnered similar results to the end of the first half, as USF outscored the Huskies 45-26, en route to an 85-59 victory, advancing into the second round of the NSIC Tournament. Renta scored a career-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting. He also grabbed three rebounds and recorded a steal. Dahl chipped in 12 points, snatched five rebounds, drained three three-pointers, and recorded two assists.
Against Southwest Minnesota State, St. Cloud holds a 41-24 all-time advantage in the programs 65 meetings but have lost the last two matchups. At halftime of last year's lone matchup, the teams were tied at 33 points despite the Huskies holding a 10-point lead with 8:05 left in the half. The second half bounced back and forth, but a 10-3 run by the Mustangs gave them an eight-point lead and all but sealed it for SMSU. St. Cloud cut the lead down to four points, but a 7-0 run gave the Mustangs a 69-58 victory over the Huskies.
SCOUTING SIOUX FALLS
Sioux Falls comes into the matchup with the Huskies with a record of 6-7 overall and a 3-4 record in the NSIC (9th place). The Cougars have been a streaky team this season – they opened their season by losing their first three games, then proceeded to win their next three games, then lost the next three games after that, and have now won three of their last four games including victories over Concordia-St. Paul, Wayne State, and Mount Mary.
Senior guard Jack Thompson leads the Cougars with averages of 13.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists. Thompson is currently third in the NSIC in assists per game. The Eagan, Minn. native also leads the team in steals with 1.2 per game and shoots 44% from the field and 36% from three-point range. Thompson has scored 14 or more points in three of his past four games including a 22-point outing against CSP.
Junior guard Shawn Warrior is the only other Cougar that averages double-digits points at 12 per game. Warrior also averages a team-high 5.5 rebounds per game and adds one steal per game. He is shooting 50% from the floor and 40% from beyond the arc. Warrior has scored 15 or more points in six of his past eight games while grabbing seven or more rebounds in six consecutive games.
Freshman guard Kenji Scales nearly averages double-digit points with 9.8 points per contest. Scales averages two rebounds and assists per game to go along with his 44% from the field and 40% from three-point range.
In the first matchup with the Huskies a season ago, Thompson was limited as a scorer – only five points on two of five shooting. Thompson however picked apart St. Cloud's defense with eight assists. Scales put together a quality outing with 12 points on four made threes in only 19 minutes of action.
In the second matchup last season ,with the bright lights of the NSIC Tournament, Thompson took over the scoring duties for the Cougars as he torched the Huskies with 35 points on 15-of-26 shooting. Thompson cashed in four three-pointers, dished out four assists, snatched three rebounds, and recorded three steals. He caught fire in the second half, scoring 25 of his 35 points in the last 20 minutes, helping the Cougars eliminate the Huskies from the NSIC Tournament. Scales had another solid outing against the Huskies with 13 points, five rebounds, three made threes, three steals, and one block.
Chris Johnson is in his 16th season as the head coach of the Cougars. Johnson is the program's all-time leader in wins and holds a record of 268-191 and was recently awarded NSIC Coach of the Year in the 2019-2020 season for leading the Cougars to a 22-8 record. During his tenure with Sioux Falls, Johnson has recorded six 20-win seasons including a 19-11 record last season and has only four seasons with less than 15 victories.
SCOUTING SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE
The Mustangs come into this matchup with St. Cloud State in the midst of a two-game losing streak with losses to Lake Superior State and Maryville. SMSU currently holds a record of 7-6 with a conference record of 4-3 (7th place).
Senior center Jake Phipps, who stands at 6-9, is the Mustangs leading scorer with 15.7 points per game (13th in the NSIC). Phipps grabs 6.8 rebounds per game (10th – NSIC) and blocks 1.3 shots per game(3rd – NSIC). Phipps shoots 55% from the field, 32% from three-point range, and 90% from the free throw line. He has scored 16 or more points in five of his past seven games including a season-high 22-points against Minnesota Duluth.
Senior guard Cliff Cofield is right behind Phipps in points, averaging 14 per game. Cofield is well rounded player who also averaged 4.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists (t-4th – NSIC), and 1.6 steals per game (3rd – NSIC). Cofield shoots 50% from the field, 42% from beyond the arc, and 90% from the free throw line. He has scored 10 or more points in nine consecutive games including a 31-point outburst against Truman State.
Freshman forward Aeron Stevens is the final Mustang that scores in double-figures at 11.8 points per game. Stevens is third on the team in rebounds per game with 4.8 and shoots 46% from the field and 37% from three-point range. Stevens found his groove offensively as of late, scoring 16 or more points in five of the past seven games including a career-high 21 points against Concordia-St. Paul.
Junior guard Dunwa Omot is nearly at the double-digit scoring mark with 8.4 points per game. Omot shoots 42% from the field while averaging 2.2 rebounds per game and one steal per game.
In last year's only matchup, Omot exploded for 27 points, seven rebounds, three made three-pointers, two assists, two blocks, and one steal. Omot shot 7-of-14 from the field and capitalized on 10 of his 11 free throw attempts. Phipps nearly recorded a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds but was inefficient, shooting three of nine from the field. Phipps also registered a block and a steal in the Mustangs 11-point victory.
Brad Bigler is in his 15th season at the helm of Southwest Minnesota State and is the programs all-time winningest coach, holding a record of 228-183. Bigler is a two-time NSIC Coach of the Year recipient – he was awarded the honor in the 2012-2013 season as well as the 2016-2017 season. Bigler has recorded double-digit victories in all but two of his 15 seasons and has exceeded 13 wins in 10 of those seasons including 16 wins last year. In 19 career matchups with St. Cloud State, Bigler has a record of 8-11.

St. Cloud State senior Matt Willert (Buffalo, Minn.) became the 46th member of the St. Cloud State Men's Basketball 1,000-point club in the 68-61 win at UMary on December 12. Willert scored a game-high 16 points, including six points after he reached 1,000. He ended the night with 1,006 career points, moving him up to No. 45 on the all-time scoring list. He current sits at No. 42 with 1,035 points. Willert has played in 86 games (2,354 minutes) over the past four seasons for the Huskies. He averages 12.0 points per game for his career on 344-of-807 (42.6%) shooting from the field, 164-478 (34.3%) from three and 183-212 (86.3%) from the free throw line.
SHINING STAR
St. Cloud State freshman Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia) was named to the NSIC Men's Basketball Shining 5 by the league office on Nov. 11 for his efforts in his first two collegiate games. He averaged 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in just 24.5 minutes per game during the 2-0 weekend for the Huskies in Kansas City. He shot 68.4% (13-of-19) from the field and 57.1% (4-of-7) from behind the three-point line over the weekend. In his collegiate debut on Friday, he erupted for 25 points and grabbed six rebounds in an 80-73 win over Pittsburg State. In just his second collegiate game ever, he recorded his first career double-double (10 points and 11 rebounds) in a 74-64 win over Henderson State.

St. Cloud State freshman Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia) was named to the NSIC Men's Basketball Shining 5 by the league office on Nov. 11 for his efforts in his first two collegiate games. He averaged 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in just 24.5 minutes per game during the 2-0 weekend for the Huskies in Kansas City. He shot 68.4% (13-of-19) from the field and 57.1% (4-of-7) from behind the three-point line over the weekend. In his collegiate debut on Friday, he erupted for 25 points and grabbed six rebounds in an 80-73 win over Pittsburg State. In just his second collegiate game ever, he recorded his first career double-double (10 points and 11 rebounds) in a 74-64 win over Henderson State.
