St. Cloud State kicked off conference play this weekend as they traveled Minot State and Minnesota Crookston.
Friday's game against Minot State saw both teams struggle offensively as Minot State would lead 15-12 after Kynan Philippe drilled a three-pointer on a fastbreak at the 11:20 mark of the first half. The Beavers started to quickly take control as they used a 20-6 run over the next seven minutes to lead 35-18 with 4:23 left in the half. Minot State kept their distance to close out the half as they would lead 45-25 at the break. Offense in the first half was a struggle for St. Cloud State as they shot 31% from the field and a lowly 10% from beyond the arc on 20 attempts. The Huskies were not much better defensively as the Beavers shot 58% from the floor. The second half was very reminiscent of the first half as the Huskies were unable to get within 20 points and trailed by as many as 34 points in the second half. The offense picked up for SCSU in the second half as they shot 52% from the field but allowed the Beavers to shoot 63% from the field. St. Cloud State would go on to lose 58-91 in their conference opener to Minot State.
The first half against Minnesota Crookston was tightly contested between the teams as neither squad was able to hold more than a four-point lead for most of the first half. The Huskies would lead 42-37 at the end of the first half after their offense got back on track. St. Cloud State shot 55% from the field while shooting 45% from beyond the arc. Much like the first half, it was a back and forth battle between the teams as the game would be tied at 67 with 5:55 left in the game. Lucas Morgan would break that tie as he finished a layup and then knocked down a corner three-pointer to give the Huskies a five-point lead. St. Cloud State would narrowly lead 75-74 with 1:10 remaining as Lee Marks III would be fouled on a layup. Marks would come up big as he knocked down both attempts from the charity stripe to give the Huskies a three point lead. Crookston would come up with a score on their next possession to get back within one. Nate Dahl drove in for a layup and would get fouled with 35 seconds left. Like Marks, Dahl came up big at the line making both of his attempts. The Huskies were unable to get a game-sealing defensive stop as Reid Grant knocked down a very tough three-point shot to tie the game with 24 seconds remaining. With an opportunity to win the game, Dahl would collapse the defense with a drive as he dished it out to an open Luke Winkel who was unable to connect on a buzzer beating three as the game would head into overtime. The overtime period saw the Huskies take an 83-82 lead with 2:44 remaining as Winkel cashed a huge three. Crookston would get the bucket right back, but Wyatt Hawks gave the Huskies the lead again with a layup. SCSU would come up clutch at the free throw line late in overtime as Anish Ramlall went two for two at the stripe with 1:21 remaining to give the Huskies a three-point lead. After forcing a stop, Winkel knocked down two free throws and after forcing another stop, would knock down two more to give the Huskies a 91-84 lead in overtime. Crookston would finish a layup, but it would not matter as St. Cloud State picked up their first conference win of the season with a 91-86 victory against Minnesota Crookston. Nate Dahl set a career-high in points with 21 while shooting 5/10 from the floor. Dahl also chipped in seven rebounds and made eight of his 11 attempts at the free throw line. Luke Winkel also set a career-high in scoring as he tallied 17 points with seven of them coming in overtime. Winkel went 6/6 from the free throw line while totaling three rebounds and assists along with two steals. Anish Ramlall scored an efficient 14 points on 5/7 shooting while dishing three assists.

Jamiir Allen scored five of his eight points in the final 79 seconds, driving in for a layup and drilling a three-pointer on the ensuing possession.
SCSU came out of halftime with an 8-2 run to knot the game at 34 points. The rest of the game went back and forth, and the Huskies briefly pulled away with a 9-2 run that was capped off by a driving layup that Joe Mutimer kissed off the glass. St. Cloud held a seven-point lead, but the Dragons made a 6-0 run with 4:46 left in the game. Mutimer slithered into the paint again for a layup which gave the Huskies a three-point lead. Luke Taylor pined a Jacob Beeninga layup attempt against the glass for a monster block as the Huskies started to see the finish line. Moorhead made two free throws on their next possession to cut the Huskies lead down to one-point. St. Cloud State called a timeout with 2:48 left in the game. Matt Willert drained a three-pointer out of the timeout to give the Huskies a four-point lead. That three-pointer by Willter marked the beginning of the end for St. Cloud State, as the Dragons ended the game on a 5-0 run to break the hearts of the Huskies. Jamir Price made two free throws with 15 seconds remaining and Luke Taylor missed a baseline jumper that would have won the game for St. Cloud. The Huskies would ultimately lose 64-65 in a heartbreaker.
Saturday's game against Northern State will be the 62nd meeting between the teams with the Huskies holding a 31-30 advantage. St. Cloud State has lost eight consecutive games to NSU including both of their meetings last year.
The first matchup against Northern State was a tightly contested, back and forth game where St. Cloud held a lead as big as seven points in the first half. A three-pointer by Joe Mutimer created that seven-point lead, but Northern responded with a 10-2 run taking a one-point lead halfway through the first half. A thunderous dunk by Luke Taylor started a 6-0 run for the Huskies. The Wolves quickly responded with back-to-back threes by Jacksen Moni and as a team, knocked down a three in four straight scoring possessions. Northern ended the half on a 16-6 run and went into halftime with a six-point lead. NSU shot a blistering 55% from beyond the arc in the first half and generated 11 three-point makes.
St. Cloud State trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half but kept the game close enough to not get out of hand. Matt Willert was fouled on a three-point attempt with 8:47 left in the game as the Huskies began their comeback attempt. Willert calmly made all three free throws, nailed a jumper in the paint, blocked a jump shot by Moni, and then drilled a three-pointer on the ensuing fastbreak to bring the Huskies within five. The Huskies continued to battle as the lead was cut down to four points off a dunk by Taylor and then three points off a deep three by Willert, but Northern iced the game by making nine of their 11 free throws attempts in the final six minutes of the game to earn an 83-77 victory.
The second matchup would be played at Halenbeck Hall where the Huskies held a modest 11-8 lead early in the first half. St. Cloud State started to shake the Wolves after Luke Taylor and Jamiir Allen scored 10 of the next 12 points for SCSU, as a 12-2 run put them in front 23-13. St. Cloud State held onto that double-digit lead for the next five minutes, but a 13-5 run brought the Wolves within four points. St. Cloud State went into halftime leading 33-26.
The Huskies defense held Northern State to 32% from the field and a lowly 15% from three-point range. Offensively, SCSU shot 45% from the field, but only connected on five of their 17 three-point attempts.
St. Cloud State pushed its lead back to double digits at the start of the second half with an 8-0 run after Hawks slammed consecutive ferocious dunks to give the Huskies a 41-27 lead. Northern State stayed within striking distance as Augustin Reede drained consecutive three-pointers to cut the SCSU lead down to nine points. Reede hit another pair of threes as a 10-2 run by NSU tied the game at 54 with just over 10 minutes left in the game. Neither team took command of the game over the next five minutes, but Jacksen Moni of Northern State put the Huskies away, scoring 17 of the last 21 points for the Wolves helping them come out with an 83-76 victory. In the final minute of the game, Northern State made all 10 of their free throw attempts to solidify the win.
