Anhorn and Okabe’s third period scores seal 3-1 victory for SCSU
OXFORD, Ohio – No. 16 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (14-9-5, 10-4-4 NCHC) finished off a sweep of Miami (7-19-2, 1-16-1 NCHC) with a 3-1 victory on Saturday night in Oxford, Ohio. The game was tied at 1-1 entering the third period before fifth-year defenseman Dylan Anhorn (Calgary, Alberta) broke the tie and fifth-year forward Zach Okabe (Okotoks, Alberta) added insurance in the third period. Freshman goaltender Isak Posch (Umea, Sweden) made his fourth start of the season and earned the win after making 21 saves.
St. Cloud State pushed the pace for the entirety of the first period and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission after outshooting the RedHawks 16-6. Sophomore forward Adam Ingram (West St. Paul, Manitoba) lite the lamp first for the Huskies on a beautiful tic-tac-toe play on the power play, as senior forward Veeti Miettinen (Espoo, Finland) and fifth-year forward Kyler Kupka (Camrose, Alberta) fed Ingram on the backside for a wide open net and goal at the 11:13 mark of the opening period.
The Huskies outshot Miami 12-9 in the second period, but Dylan Moulton was able to tie the score at 1-1 with a breakaway goal that squeaked past Posch for the only goal SCSU allowed all night.
In the third period, Miami had plenty of plenty of scoring chances, but the Huskies remained strong and kept Miami out of the scoring column. Midway through the final frame, Husky captain Dylan Anhorn provided the jolt SCSU needed to re-capture momentum. The play started when freshman forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) poke-checked the puck away from Miami in the offensive zone and right to Vetti Miettinen's stick. Miettinen fed Hall back as he was breaking up the right side of the ice, and then Hall turned towards the center of the ice and made a cross-ice pass to Anhorn, who was ready for a one-time slap shot to beat the Miami goaltender at 10:16.
The Huskies would then add insurance with just under two minutes remaining when Kupka fed Okabe on a cross-ice pass to the backside of the net to make the score 3-1 with 1:59 left in the game.
