St. Cloud State Men’s Basketball Close Four-Game Road Stretch with Trip to Winona and Mankato

Huskies have won five of past seven games
St. Cloud, Minn.- St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (10-8, 6-4 NSIC) close out their four-game trip by traveling to RV Winona State on Friday, January 17 and then to Minnesota State on Saturday, January 18. Friday's game is set for 5:30 p.m. while Saturday's game will be played at 3:30 p.m.

Last Time Out
St. Cloud State hit the road this past week as they traveled to Concordia-St. Paul on Wednesday and then to Minnesota Duluth on Saturday.
The first five minutes against CSP were tightly contested as neither team could take control of the game. The Huskies started to grab momentum after Wyatt Hawks threw down a dunk to put the Huskies up two. A jumper by Kynan Philippe capped off a 6-1 run as St. Cloud State held a five-point lead. SCSU steadily held that lead for the next few minutes before a vicious dunk by Hawks sparked the start of a big run. The big man forced a steal on the defensive end and then nailed a jumper to push the lead to eight points. The Huskies forced another steal following a timeout as Luke Winkel picked up the loose change and took it the distance for a layup to extend the lead to 10 points. Antwan Kimmons started to cut in the lead as he knocked down two free throws for CSP, but Nathan Bunkosky rang in a big three to push the lead back up to double-digits. Winkel cashed a jumper with 6:11 left in the half as St. Cloud State led by 11 points. From that point, the Golden Bears had a strong close to the half as 13-4 run set the score at 38-34 going into the break. The Huskies played a phenomenal defensive half as they held the potent CSP offense to 29% shooting The second half started out how the game began with neither team able to take control. Holding a two-point lead with 15:15 on the clock, Lucas Morgan drilled a three to push the lead to five. CSP came down and finished a layup, but Anish Ramlall responded with another three for SCSU. The Huskies forced a miss on the defensive end before Lee Marks III grabbed an offensive rebound off a Winkel miss and put it back up while getting fouled for the and-one. Marks converted the free throw to put the Huskies up by nine points. St. Cloud State held a multiple-possession for the next 10+ minutes before the Golden Bears roared back as a three-pointer by Reid Patterson set the score at 81-78. Having newly found momentum, the Golden Bears finished a layup as they now only trailed by one-point with 3:12 left in the game. Free throws by Winkel and Nate Dahl pushed the Huskies lead back up to four points with 2:40 remaining, but CSP finished another layup almost instantly. A miss by the Huskies and key offensive rebounds by the Golden Bears ultimately led to Patterson tying the game with 1:44 left in the game following a jumper. On the ensuing offensive possession for SCSU, Hawks knocked down a big jumper to give the Huskies a two-point lead with 1:13 remaining. CSP missed a three-pointer on their possession as Winkel came up big on the offensive end as he finished a layup with 31 seconds left to put SCSU up four. Antwan Kimmons would split a pair of free throws, missing the second as Morgan got fouled with 15 seconds left. Morgan also split his free throws as Patterson drilled a three with 10 seconds remaining as CSP now only trailed by one. Winkel would then get fouled with seven seconds left and came up clutch by making both attempts. Now up by three-points, the Huskies played the foul game as they prohibited CSP from tying the game on a three. Kimmons went to the line and made the first, but missed the second as Winkel came up with the rebound. Winkel was again clutch at the line as two free throw makes put SCSU up four with three seconds remaining. The Golden Bears miss fired on a three on their final possession as the Huskies came away with a big 93-89 victory over RV Concordia-St. Paul. Luke Winkel had a career evening as he posted career highs in points, assists, and field goals made while tying his career-high in rebounds in his first career start. Winkel posted 24 points on an efficient 8/14 shooting while dishing eight assists and grabbing five rebounds. He also made eight of his 10 free throws while recording a steal. He has scored 13+ points in five consecutive games. Wyatt Hawks controlled the paint as he tallied 19 points on 8/12 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds. Hawks also blocked two shots and recorded three stocks on the evening. This was Hawks' eighth game scoring double-digit points this season.

The Bulldogs started to take control of the game as they found their offensive groove with a 17-5 run over the next eight minutes. The Huskies were able to respond to that run as a 7-0 run brought them back within five points with 5:49 left in the half. The Bulldog stopped the bleeding with a jumper by Joshua Brown, but St. Cloud State maintained their momentum as a layup by Luke Winkel tied the game at 29. UMD ended the half on a high note as Noah Paulson finished a buzzer beating layup as St. Cloud State trailed 31-33 at the break. The second half started tight as neither team held a lead bigger than one possession for the first seven minutes. UMD began to take control of the game after a tip-in and-one by Austin Andrews. He converted the and-one and from that point Duluth went on a 7-1 run to lead 54-44 with 8:32 left in the game. The Bulldogs held that lead over the next four minutes before the Huskies started to make a late comeback. Trailing 61-48 with 4:40 left in the game, St. Cloud State used a 7-0 with all seven points coming from the free throw line as UMD led 61-55 with 2:37 left in the game. The teams traded defensive stops over the next minute and a half before the Bulldogs pushed the lead back up to eight after a pair of free throws with 1:06 left. Winkel finished a layup to respond and get the lead back down to six. The Huskies ultimately ran out of time as Duluth put the game away at the free throw line as they would go on to win 66-58. St. Cloud State shot 35% from the field and 16% from beyond the arc. Luke Winkel paced the Huskies in scoring with 19 points on 5/7 from the field and 8/11 from the free throw line. He also totaled two steals and rebounds in his second career start. Winkel has score 19+ points in consecutive games and made eight free throws in consecutive games. The Warriors went go on to beat St. Cloud State 77-69.
Saturday's game against Minnesota State Mankato will be the 193rd game between the programs with St. Cloud State holding a 98-94 lead in the series. Despite the lead in the series, the Mavericks have won eight consecutive games against the Huskies including both of the matchups last season.
The first matchup at Halenbeck Hall saw Mankato set the tone early as they burst out of the gates with a 12-3 advantage. The Huskies would trail by as many as 12 points in the first half, but Wyatt Hawks provided a spark off the bench with six points to cut the deficit to six going into halftime. The Mavericks surged out of halftime with seven quick points by Malik Willingham and would never look back. St. Cloud State would trail by nine or more points the rest of the 2nd half as Mankato earned a comfortable 79-61 victory to give the Huskies their first loss of the season.
Traveling to Mankato for the second meeting, the Mavericks opened the game on a 9-3 run with three-pointers by Malik and Kyreese Willingham. St. Cloud State rallied from that deficit, as a three-pointer by Nate Dahl brought the Huskies within two-points, setting the score at 10-12. Over the next two minutes, MSU grew its lead to 12-points after a 10-0 run was capped off by a layup from Brady Williams. St. Cloud State remained within striking distance after Jamiir Allen nailed a three-pointer with 6:43 left in the half, bringing the Huskies within eight points. The Mavericks then started to take command of the game, with a 10-0 to give them an 18-point lead at halftime.

Scouting Winona State
The Winona State Warriors come into this matchup holding a 13-4 record with an 8-3 mark in conference play. Winona State is currently receiving votes in the latest NABC Poll. The Warriors have won five of their past six games with the lone loss coming to No. 5 Minot State in triple overtime. WSU has won their past three games following that loss with wins against UMary, Minnesota Crookston, and Bemidji State. Winona State came into this season projected to finish 11th in the conference following a 2023-24 season where they went 21-10 with a 14-8 conference record. The Warriors qualified for the NSIC Tournament where they beat Northern State and MSU Moorhead to reach the semifinals. Their season would end as they were defeated 90-76 with a loss to Minnesota Duluth.
The Warriors have started the same lineup for all 17 games with Luke Haertle, Connor Drew, Jhei-R Jones, Isaiah Thompson, and Tyler Mason earning the nod. All five starters score in double digits. Haertle is leading the way with 17.4 points per game which ranks third in the NSIC. The sophomore guard is shooting 44.9% from the field while totaling 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.8 stocks per game. The Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks come into this game holding an 11-7 record with a 7-3 mark in conference play. The Mavericks have won three of their past four games with victories against UMary, Bemidji State, and Minnesota Crookston. MSU came into this season projected to finish first in the NSIC while being tabbed the No. 1 team in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Preseason Poll. Scouting Minnesota State Mankato
The Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks come into this game holding an 11-7 record with a 7-3 mark in conference play. The Mavericks have won three of their past four games with victories against UMary, Bemidji State, and Minnesota Crookston. MSU came into this season projected to finish first in the NSIC while being tabbed the No. 1 team in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Preseason Poll. The Mavericks are currently the reigning NSIC Champion, Central Region Champion, and National Champion as they totaled a 35-2 record with a 20-2 conference record. Minnesota State captured their first national championship after beating Nova Southeastern 88-85 after Kyreese Willingham made a three-pointer with 0.8 seconds left to win the game.
Willingham returns this season and is currently the fourth leading scorer in the conference with 17.2 points per game. He is shooting 47.1% from the field to go along with 5.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 3.0 stocks. Senior Justin Eagins is the teams second leading scorer with a 13.7 average while shooting 41.7% from the field and 36.4% from three. Eagins is third in the conference in assists with 4.6 per game.
