Huskies take a 3-2 lead in the third before four unanswered Maverick goals
OMAHA, Neb. – No. 17 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (11-12-0, 4-9-0 NCHC) grabbed a 3-2 lead in the third period but then allowed four unanswered goals to drop its fifth consecutive game in a 6-3 loss to Omaha (13-10-0, 9-4-0 NCHC) on Friday night at Baxter Arena in Omaha, Neb. The Huskies outshot the Mavericks 34-32 and 16-6 in the third period, but two power play goals helped the Mavericks upended SCSU in a four-goal period.
The first period ended scoreless despite numerous scoring chances from Omaha, as fifth-year goaltender Gavin Enright (Farmington, Minn.) turned away all 12 shots from the Mavericks. Omaha broke through first at the 6:50 mark of the second period when Zach Urdahl found the back of the net on a 2-on-1 breakaway. SCSU then responded on the game's first power play five minutes later when freshman forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) buried a rebound to tie the score at 1-1. Both teams then traded goals in the last 2:07 of the period, first Omaha and then SCSU when sophomore forward Verner Miettinen (Espoo, Finland) scored his third goal of the season on a near-sided shot that snuck through the UNO's goalie's pads.
SCSU took the lead early in the third period when junior forward Grant Ahcan (Savage, Minn.) deflected a shot from the point from sophomore defenseman Warren Clark (Riverside, Ontario). The deflection hit off a post then a defender's skate and into the net to make the score 3-2. SCSU's lead didn't last long, however, as Omaha scored a power play goal just over three minutes later and then three more goals to cap the scoring a 6-3.
