Minnesota wins 5-3, sweeps SCSU in opening series of WCHA play
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 10 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (3-3-0, 0-2-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) was swept its first WCHA series of the season after falling to No. 3 Minnesota, 5-3 in game two on Saturday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
The Huskies took its first lead of the series when redshirt junior forward Laura Zimmermann (Ringgenberg, Switzerland) scored her first goal of the season six and a half minutes into the first period. Zimmermann's shot from the high slot took a friendly bounce off the stick of a Minnesota defender and bounced off the right post and in. SCSU would carry its 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The second period saw five goals after yesterday's middle 20 saw four. Minnesota (6-0-0, 2-0-0 WCHA) tied the game in the first 1:45 of the second and took a 2-1 lead just past the halfway point. SCSU evened the game at two apiece after freshman forward Maria Mikaelyan (Moscow, Russia) scored her second goal in as many games. Redshirt sophomore defender Sydney Bryant (Traverse City, Mich.) made a nice cross-ice pass to senior forward Avery Farrell (Rogers, Minn.) who took a shot from the left dot that bounced off a Gopher defender right to Mikaelyan who had great positing in front of the net.
Less than two minutes later, the Gophers regained the lead for the second time in the period, but graduate defender Grace Wolfe (Owatonna, Minn.) brought the game back even in the final 30 seconds of the period, scoring a beautiful one-timer off a great pass from Mikaelyan.
Minnesota added a pair of third period goals to pull away with a 5-3 win to sweep the weekend home-and-home series.
