Vermont tried to clear the puck numerous times but sophomore forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) was waiting on the right side boards to keep the puck in the offensive zone. He quickly fired a cross-ice pass to junior Adam Ingram (West St. Paul, Manitoba), who touch passed the puck to Gross in the high slot. Gross picked the top-right corner, beating a defender and the goalie to make the score 1-1 at 4:57 on the final period.
