St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey Finishes Homecoming Sweep of Alaska Anchorage

Burnevik scores twice to bring season total to eight, Huskies score three power play goals
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (5-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) scored three more power plays and five goals overall in a 5-1 victory over Alaska Anchorage (0-4-0, Ind.) on Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Sophomore forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) scored two more goals to bring his season total to eight through seven games while sophomore goaltender Patriks Berzins (Talsi, Latvia) made 28 saves to secure the win in net.
SCSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead with its quickest goal of the season to-date, capitalizing on an early power play opportunity when senior defenseman Cooper Wylie's (Stillwater, Minn.) one-timer from just inside the blue line made its way to the back of the net at 2:19 of the opening period. Junior forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta), who made the initial pass to setup the play, provided a screen in front of the Seawolves goaltender to block his view. Next up was freshman forward Noah Urness (Roseau, Minn.), who scored SCSU's second power play goal of the night halfway through the period when his wrist shot from the top of the left circle made its way through traffic and past the goaltender for a 2-0 Husky lead. Finally, near the end of the period was Burnevik's first goal of the night, as he buried home a rebound in front of the net with 2:33 left in the period to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead at the first intermission.
SCSU continued to pile on in the second period, first with freshman forward Aiden Welch (White Bear Lake, Minn.) scoring his first collegiate goal at the 11:08 mark of the period when junior forward Daimon Gardner's (Eagle Lake, Ontario) shot deflected off Welch's skate. Late in the period was Burnevik's turn again as he teed up a one-timer from the right dot on the power play to score for the second time on the night with 1:35 left in the period.
Alaska Anchorage was able to score in the third period to get on the scoreboard, but Berzins made 10 of his 28 saves in the final period of the night to shutdown the Seawolves and finish off the sweep.
