St. Cloud State Men's Hockey Heads East for Road Series at Miami

Huskies will play outside of state of Minnesota for first time this season against RedHawks this season
THE MATCHUP
- St. Cloud State Men's Hockey makes its first road trip outside of the state of hockey this weekend when the Huskies head to Miami for an NCHC series at the Goggin Ice Center in Oxford, Ohio. The series begins on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. CT and then concludes at 6:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. CT on Saturday. The series will be streamed on NCHC.tv with Greg Waddell, Drew Davis and David Ventura on the call while the voice of the Huskies Jim Erickson will have the call on KNSI (99.3 FM / 1450 AM).
- The Huskies are looking to snap a three-game losing streak, dropping both games of a road series at then-No. 7 Minnesota Duluth 4-0 and 3-2 (OT) on Nov. 7 and a Tuesday setback on Nov. 11 to St. Thomas, 3-1, in its last time out. Miami is off to one of its best starts in recent history, boasting a 7-3-0 record, but has dropped three of its last four games, including a road sweep to the hands of then-No. 8/9 Western Michigan, 5-2 and 6-2, last weekend.
SERIES HISTORY
- After a 1-8-2 start to the series, the Huskies are 35-9-4 in the last 48 meetings with the RedHawks since Dec. 30, 2010. Overall, SCSU leads the all-time series, 36-17-6, which dates back to the 1987-88 season. The Huskies are 7-1-2 in the last 10 meetings between the two programs and have won six consecutive dating back to Nov. 3, 2023. In its last series, SCSU swept Miami 3-2 (OT) and 3-1 on Nov. 8-9, 2024 at the Brooks Center, its only meeting a season ago.
- Senior forward Grant Ahcan lifted the Huskies to victory in the Friday night contest, scoring a first period shorthanded goal and the overtime winner for his first career multi-goal game. Sophomore forward Austin Burnevik then provided the offense in the Saturday winner, scoring a pair of goals in the 3-1 victory.
TERRIFIC TRIO
- If you don't know them, get to know them. Sophomore forward Austin Burnevik, junior forward Tyson Gross and junior forward Barrett Hall have each jumped out to hot starts to the 2025-26 campaign and are scoring more than a point per game. Burnevik and Gross each began the year by scoring in the first nine games of the season and currently rank in the top-20 in the nation in scoring.
- Burnevik and Gross are tied for the team lead in scoring with 15 points each, ranking sixth in the NCHC and 17th nationally. Gross has four goals and 11 assists for 15 points while Burnevik has 11 goals and four assists for 15 points. Burnevik's six power play goals leads the NCAA, while his three game-winning goals and 11 goals overall both rank second. Gross has won the fourth-most faceoffs in the nation at 158 and ranks 10th in assists with 11. Hall has four goals and nine assists for 13 points with three of his scores coming on the man advantage. He has scored a point in eight of 12 games, two or more points in four and had three assists in a 5-1 win over then-No. 3 Western Michigan on Nov. 1.
LETHAL POWER PLAY
- The Huskies have been lethal on the man advantage to open the 2025-26 season, scoring 18 of its 38 goals on the man advantage with at least one power play tally in 10 of 12 games this season and five games with multiple power play goals. SCSU's 32.7 percent success rate (18-of-55) leads the NCAA while its 18 power play goals rank second. The Huskies' four power play goals against Vermont on Oct. 18 were its most since scoring four against St. Thomas on Oct. 7, 2023 while sophomore forward Austin Burnevik netted two of the four power play tallies to become the first Husky to score two power play goals in the same game since Grant Cruikshank scored two at Omaha on Feb. 24, 2023. Burnevik's six power play goals are also the top mark in the nation.
NOTES FROM LAST SERIES:
- 3-1 loss at St. Thomas (11-11-25)
- With the loss, St. Cloud State moves to 23-27-0 all-time against St. Thomas and 7-3-0 since the two schools became Division-I programs.
- The game was the first between the two programs played in Lee & Penny Anderson on the campus of St. Thomas.
- The Huskies had 32 shots on goal, marking the 11th time in 12 games they have registered 30 or more shots on goal.
- SCSU went 3-of-3 on the penalty kill, the third time this season they have been perfect on the PK while raising their season mark to 73.1 percent (30-of-41).
- Sophomore forward Austin Burnevik scored his 11th goal of the season to move into a tie for the NCAA lead (at the time) with Penn State's JJ Wiebusch and Michigan's Will Horcoff.
- Freshman forward Noah Urness recorded his fourth assist of the season while sophomore defenseman Thor Byfuglien recorded his second.
- Sophomore goaltender Patriks Berzins made 32 saves to match his season and career-high, the third time he has reached that mark this season.
NO STOPPING BURNEY
- After becoming the first freshman in program history to lead the team in both goals and points in 2024-25, sophomore forward Austin Burnevik is picking up right where he left off a season ago. The rising sophomore ranks among the nation's best among goal scorers, ranking first in power play goals with six, second in game-winning goals with three and second in overall goals with 11.
- After being held off the score sheet in the series against Minnesota Duluth, Burnevik scored SCSU's lone goal on Nov. 11 against St. Thomas to keep his hot streak going. He's scored a point in 10 of 12 games this season.
- The 2024-25 All-NCHC Rookie Team honoree opened the season with a nine-game point streak, which is the second-longest streak in the nation this season. He also scored in the last two games of last season, moving his point streak to 11 games, the longest scoring streak by a Husky since Jonny Brodzinski had an 13-game point streak from Dec. 12, 2012 - Feb. 2, 2012. Since 2002-03, only six Husky skaters have recorded seven point streaks of 10+ games. Burnevik is joined by Garrett Roe (14, 2007-08), Jonny Brodzinski (13, 2012-13), Drew LeBlanc (13, 2012-13), Ryan Lasch (11, 2007-08; 10, 2007-08) and Tyson Gross (10, 2025-26).
- Burnevik scored a goal in five consecutive games between Oct. 18 and Nov. 1, the longest streak since Veeti Miettinen scored in six straight games between Oct. 20 – Nov. 11, 2023.
GROSS IN THE DOT
- Junior forward Tyson Gross has been dominate in the faceoff circle this season, winning 158 draws this season to rank second in the NCHC and fourth in the NCAA. The Husky junior has won 60.3 percent (158-104) of his faceoffs this season, including
- an NCAA-high 20 wins in both games of the Alaska Anchorage series. Gross went 20-2 in the dot on Friday and 20-5 on Saturday in the series sweep.
- Gross has scored in 10 of 12 games this season, collecting four goals and team-best 11 assists for 15 points, ranking 10th in the NCAA in assists and 17th in points.
- After scoring just five points in SCSU's first 13 games of the 2024-25 season, Gross scored 20 points (7g/13a) in the last 23 games last season. Dating back to Dec. 6, 2024, Gross has produced just under a point per game at 0.97 ppg with 35 points (11g/24a) in 36 games.
- Gross scored a power play goal and had two assists in SCSU's 5-1 win over Western Michigan (Nov. 1) to extend his point streak to 10 consecutive games dating back to March 15, 2025. His 10-game point streak is the just the seventh streak of 10+ games in program history since 2002-03.
- Gross' three points match a career-high, the third time he has reached that mark after also reaching that mark against Omaha on Dec. 7, 2024 and against Colorado College on Feb. 21, 2025.
ONE MORE TIME
- A key emphasis for the Huskies this season was to score one more goal per game than last season when SCSU averaged 2.19 goals per game. 12 games into the season, the Huskies are well on their way to accomplishing their goal in 2025-26, scoring 3.17 goals per game (38 goals overall).
- SCSU scored five goals in four consecutive games between Oct. 24 and Nov. 1, marking its first streak of four consecutive games with five or more goals since Nov. 19 – Dec. 9, 2022, when the Huskies scored five, seven, six and seven goals.
- SCSU's 3.17 goals per game ranks 25th in the NCAA.
- The scoring has been balanced as well with 16 Huskies finding the back of the net with sophomore forward Austin Burnevik leading the way with 11 goals and a nation-leading six power play tallies.
- The power play has been potentially responsible for the added production through the first third of the season, with the Huskies finding the back of the net on the man advantage in 10 of 12 games this season and 18 times overall. SCSU's 32.7 percent (18-55) success rate on the power play ranks first nationally and is more than double its success rate from last season (16.8%, 16-95).
