SCSU beats RV Lake Superior State 90-84
Duluth, MN. – St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (1-2) picked up their first victory of the season Friday evening as they defeated RV Lake Superior State 90-84. Three Huskies scored 14+ points while they totaled 30 bench points.
The first five minutes of the game was a back-and-forth battle as neither team gathered much separation from the other. A three-pointer by Luke Winkel at the 15:14 mark of the half brought the Huskies within a point to set the score at 13-12. Over the next five minutes, Lake Superior State started to take control of the game with an 8-2 run to take a 21-14 lead and warrant a timeout by SCSU. Out of that timeout, St. Cloud State got back on track with a quick 6-0 run to close the gap. The teams continued to trade buckets, but the Huskies relentless attack on the rim and the offensive glass resulted in free throws to slow down the game and take a toll on the Lakers defense. A layup by Bob Griechen after a steal and assist by Azayah Washington led to a timeout for LSSU as the Huskies took a 31-26 lead with 5:36 left in the half. St. Cloud State held firm on their lead as Wyatt Hawks jammed home a putback dunk to send SCSU into the break with a 41-38 lead.
Moving into the second half, the Huskies carried over their late momentum from the first half as a layup by Hawks capped off a 17-8 run to give SCSU a 58-46 lead. LSSU tried to shake things up for the Huskies offense by moving into a 2-3 zone. While it did cause some mishaps, SCSU did settle in as a corner three by Washington pushed the lead back up to nine after the Lakers started to chip away. The Huskies answered the bell every time LSSU looked to truly gain momentum as they knocked down big shot after big shot. With 4:58 left in the game, Anish Ramlall splashed home a three to set the score at 78-68. The Lakers would ramp up their defensive pressure and ultimately shift to a press to cause chaos over the final few minutes. While LSSU got as close as three points, the Huskies did their job at the free throw line as they sunk eight of their final 10 free throws to close out the game. St. Cloud State would capture a 90-84 victory for their first win of the season.
