Ahcan scores twice, Berzins stops 35-of-37 shots to earn victory
OXFORD, Ohio – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (7-7-0, 2-4-0 NCHC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on to take the series finale and four points on the weekend in a 4-2 win over Miami (8-4-0, 2-4-0 NCHC) on Saturday night at Goggin Ice Center in Oxford, Ohio. All three goal scorers for SCSU scored for the second consecutive game with senior forward Grant Ahcan (Savage, Minn.) leading the way with his second career two-goal performance. Sophomore goaltender Patriks Berzins (Talsi, Latvia) was solid in between the pipes for SCSU, making a career-best 35 saves en route to his fourth win of the season.
SCSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead when it took advantage of a timely out of the box moment at the 13:05 mark of the first period. Ahcan had been serving a two-minute minor for cross-checking and jumped out of the box right as junior forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) was making a clear during the penalty kill. Ahcan grabbed the puck before the blue and was all alone on a breakaway, faking multiple shots before waiting patiently and wrapping the puck around the outside pad of the goalie for the score. Ahcan's second goal in as many nights was the only goal of the first period.
Both teams scored twice in the middle frame, with SCSU jumping out to a 3-0 lead before Miami crawled back to make it 3-2 at the second intermission. The Huskies' goals both came on the power play, first from junior forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) on a re-entry into the zone and then next from junior forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) on a deflection from a shot from the point from senior defenseman Max Smolinski (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.). Senior forward Adam Ingram (West St. Paul, Manitoba) and sophomore forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) recorded assists on Hall's goal while Smolinski and senior defenseman Josh Zinger (Red Deer, Alberta) had helpers on Gross' goal. The Redhawks would then claw its way back with goals at the 10:13 and 15:06 marks to pull within one goal heading into the third and final period.
Both teams had a power play chance in the third period, but no one found the back of the net until Ahcan netted an empty net goal to seal the victory with 0:58 left.
