Huskies couldn’t complete comeback attempt, fall to MSU 3-2 in overtime to close out first half of the season
MANKATO, Minn. – No. 13/14 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (7-12-1, 3-10-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) dropped its final game of 2025 to No. 12 Minnesota State, 3-2 in overtime at the Mayo Clinic HSEC in Mankato on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (11-7-1, 5-7-1 WCHA) scored their first goal of the weekend just 49 seconds into the game and extended its lead to two just 30 seconds into the second period. SCSU cut its deficit in half when senior forward Avery Farrell (Rogers, Minn.) scored her second goal in as many games with 2:48 left in the second period. Redshirt junior Laura Zimmermann (Ringgenberg, Switzerland) was denied by the MSU goaltender and then had her follow up shot saved by a defenders stick but the puck went to Farrell who was in the slot and scored before the goalie was able to get back into the net.
After forcing a Minnesota State turnover, the Huskies brought numbers into their offensive zone and the puck went to the stick of junior forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) who split a pair of defenders and beat the netminder who couldn't slide over to make the save, tying the game at two 2:37 into the third period with her second goal of the weekend.
MSU ended the game 1:50 into overtime after the Huskies turned over the puck in their defensive zone and were caught out of position, conceding a goal after a Maverick skated behind the net and found her teammate unmarked on the back door.
