Huskies tie game in third period before giving up shorthanded goal for game-winner
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (7-9-0, 2-6-0 NCHC) outshot North Dakota (12-4-0, 6-2-0 NCHC), 37-25 and was +14 in the faceoff dot, but lost 4-2 on Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Huskies pulled event with the Fighting Hawks midway through the third period but then gave up a shorthanded goal soon after, which came to be the game-winner.
North Dakota scored the game's first goal in the first period on a Cade Littler power play goal at the 13:49 mark and then extended their lead to 2-0 with Littler's second goal of the game at the 8:15 mark of the second period.
With 2:37 left in the second period, SCSU went on a major power play after Keaton Verhoeff was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for butt-ending. The Huskies cut the lead in half less than a minute into the major when sophomore defenseman Finn Loftus (Blaine, Minn.) fired a wrister from just outside the left dot and found the back of the net. SCSU seemed to tie the score at the end of the period, but a goal from junior forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) was disallowed after it crossed the goal line with no time on the clock.
In the third period, SCSU was able to actually tie the game on a rebound attempt from redshirt senior forward Ryan Rosborough (Mt. Brydges, Ontario) at the 11:10 mark of the period. However, the momentum was short-lived, with North Dakota's Jake Livanavage scoring a shorthanded goal at 12:56 and an empty net goal to cap the score at 4-2.
